I'm in the market for a SMALL humidifier, not more than 10" to 12" high to be used in a counter high refrigerator for sausage curing.

I'm not into toys, but I'd like to know if anyone has tried this one.

The specs look good as do the reviews.
Are there better SMALL humidifiers on the market?

I just started the search on how I'm going to make a sausage fermenting chamber and the first thing I have found is you want a humidifier that produces cool vapor. The most important thing is a humidifier that has controls that can be set to the level you need.

Habs will be along shortly (I hope) with more knowledge, as I have just started my quest for the perfect fermented sausage.

When you get to the end of your quest OU812 take some pictures  ;D

The link that MikeRadio posted is the type you would want in my opinion. It's as Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier so it doesn't have any filters or pads that require replacement.

The other thing you will need is a Humidity Controller. Here is a link to one that SausageMaker sells.

Here is another one that I like better and if I remember correctly this is also the one that Habs is going to using in his setup.

Walleye.... why do you like the "green" one better than the one Sausageaker is selling.
What am I gaining for the extra $25.00?
Thanks in advance....George

I haven't paid much attention to the smaller ones, so I haven't researched them. Your other information is correct, and links have been posted with more information. Though you want some control over how much mist it puts out, if you have a Line Voltage Humidistat avoid the digital models. If you have hard water, and don't go with a filtered model (filters can be very expensive) you may have to purchase distilled water, or everything may be covered with a white powder do to minerals in the water.

Mr. Walleye.

Thanks for the links.

Habs.

I have well water and have to use distilled water in every thing I make, thanks.

From what I can tell the Sausagemaker one has to be plugged into an outlet directly, then your humidifier plugged into it. The Green Air one has a cord that goes to the outlet, then the end of the cord has a piggyback plug for the humidifier. You have to remember both these units have built in sensors for the humidity level so you may want to be flexible where you mount it in the cabinet so the Green Air unit would provide more flexibility for this... Hope that made sense... just my 2 cents...  ;)

These are the only 2 I have found on the market.

Habs... Did you go with the Green Air one?

Several people have mentioned they prefer the "Green Air"
http://www.greenair.com/old/humidistat.htm
over the less expensive "Traceable Controller"
http://www.sausagemaker.com/19002humiditycontroller.aspx

I have no problem in paying the extra $20.00 for the GreenAir, but just wondering what I'm getting for the extra dollars. Quality, features, or what

Hi Mike;

I went with the Green Air THC-1, for the reasons you stated.

I've been looking at this freezer to be used as my cure box:

http://www.frigidaire.com/products/kitchen-appliances/freezers/ffc0723dw

I can get it at CostCo for $199.00.
Plenty of "hang space", a drain hole to run wires trough, a shelf (the cover for the compressor unit) to set the humidifyer on.
Any thoughts on using a "freezer" rather than a "refrierator" as a cure box?

The humidifier that you are looking at (the dragon) should work great.  We got the frog one at Target after my 4 year old daughter had her tonsils taken out a month or so ago.  It was the cheapest that we thought would work.  It definitely puts out a cool mist vapor that you can see.  It is a heavy-ish vapor, so a lot of it would go up into the air about 12 inches then float and drop down...  Our carpet got quite wet the first night! :)

Let me know if you have any questions!

An upright freezer would work better then the chest freezer. More space and easier access.

Got that very humidifier and it works great! although I use it for the Kids room.
Just be sure to keep it clean and dry when not in use.
Mold and mildew can start to go fairly quickly.
Being ultrasonic know that the water in the base does warm up a bit after a couple hours of use. (one reason why mold and mildew can start quickly).

I like the cool air vapor output that can be controlled and the realitive ease of cleaning.  Kids like the design  ;)
