Go with the roast. Ribs can be a little tricky at times.

Welcome Niner.  You've come to the right place.  Ribs or roast, both short cooks with a delicious outcome.  Assuming you mean a chuck roast when you say roast.  Both can be a little tricky, but both with just a little care and attention a newbie can produce some grand eats and bask in the standing ovation the beneficiaries of your noble endeavor will surely bestow!
