Hannafords; a food chain here on the East coast advertised ground buffalo meat for $3.99/lb. I never had it so I'm going to buy a few pounds, and some of it will be used to make a meat loaf. I did a search for meat loaf and came up with this site.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip, Hab! I have used buffalo meat for my last two ABT preps (so they're real ABTs!) and it's fantastic! It's incredibly lean (usually just 5-7% fat)--so lean that when I brown it in a skillet and leave the pan tilted to drain off the fat I barely get a tablespoon from a pound of meat even after waiting 10 minutes for it to drain. $3.99 is a terrific price, too, so I'm going to pick some up myself at Hannafords. BTW, I use chipotle chile pepper to spice up the buffalo meat and it's a great, heart-warming combination!

Hab, just got a look at the meat loaf webpage you posted, and it's mind-boggling! The whole website looks dynamite--have you used any of their recipes before?

The same store had jalapenos on sale for $1.99/lb, and I picked up two pounds of peppers, so I will give your recipe a try.

I found the site this morning, and haven't had a chance to check it out, other then the meat loaf, and chicken sections. I'm going to check it out further right now.

I have been checking out the site. I had no clue they had all those recipes and other information on that site. I'm in my glory at the moment - I located the wings recipes [^]

Kirk; should this thread be moved to New Topics?

Thanks for the link. Meatloaf is a favorite to fall back on when I don't have any other ideas for dinner. I thought I'd thrown just about every vegetable and grain into a loaf but here's a bunch of things I had not thought of.

Dang, and here I thought he might be coming out with a "Best of" album![;)][:D][:D]

[:0][:0][:0][:0] Holy crap!!!

Round here they are regular price 3# for $0.99![:0] When they're on sale you can purchase enough to warrant a new septic field for under 5 bucks![:D]

Guess we have more "major consumers" in these parts.[;)]

Yeah! It's a dam shame. In this area, and this time of year, the price is often $2.99/lb. Even Sam's doesn't carry them this time of year.

PS
Sorry to disappoint you about Meat Loaf.[:D]

Hab,

Our Sams still carry them. The past few months they have been the smaller type and hotter than fried chicken gizzards on a Friday night. But lately they have been getting in those big honki'n mild ones, very nice. They say they are "Premium" what ever that means but they are 2.79 for two lbs.

They are the one thing thats cheeper in California. I think .99 is average. I can't remember exactly. I know I bought about a dozen for less than a dollar.

I have had great success in the past just growing Japs in a medium flower pot with doing nothing to them but water and potting soil. They will produce for a long time as well.

I like Jeff's idea--Hab is right about the usual price in New England being about $3/lb. $1.99 is a great price around here. I have a grad student from New Mexico who is trying to get me to order large quantities of chile peppers from New Mexico. He's checking with his parents for suppliers, but does anyone else know a reliable and good quality vendor? I understand that chili peppers freeze well, too . . . anyone with experience with that?

I don't have any information on vendors, but I have frozen bell peppers in the past. Bell peppers freeze well, so jalapenos should freeze well also. After blanching the peppers I would either dice, or coarsely chop before freezing. I have never froze whole peppers, but I don't believe it would be much different then freezing peppers that have been cut up.

Last time I froze whole peppers, they seemed watery and lacked flavor after defrosting them. As for cutting them up, that works much better if you are going to use them in a soup or sauce. Even with the higher cost, I prefer fresh veggies anytime.
