I just bought a new digital 4 rack and tried it for the first time. I set the temp for 230 degrees, but the hottest it would climb to was 170. It was a warmish day here today, so I can't figure out what I was doing wrong. Has this happened to anyone else?

Charlie,
Welcome to the forum!  Sounds like the heating element isn't powered up.  Make certain all of the cords are FIRMLY plugged in especially the power cable from the smoke generator to the tower and then take the temp sensor cable (the small cable) and plug and unplug it several times to make certain you have good connection.

You also might want to check inside you smoke generator.    I had the same problem with my 6 rack when I bought it.   There was a loose wire.   It had come off the contact.

The next thing to do is don't bother looking at the door thermo and get a Maverick or some type of wire probe thermo. Also plug your cabinet power cord straight into the cabinet from the wall outlet and then look at your element. I fit is glowing good and red then you know the element is working fine.
