Just got my new DBS, seasoning it as I type. I've never had a smoker before but am looking forward to doing my first smoke. I've been on chemo for 6 months and I'm ready to get fat.

Be careful about calling yourself and EXPERT! An ex is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure!

I set my oven to 150 per Bradley instructions but I just checked it and the unit says temp is 170. I have a thermometer on the 2nd rack it also says 170.

That would be normal with the DBS. It is just the temp swing from the unit heating up as you watch it will settle down and swing less.

Thanks, I think I'll try a brisket for my first smoke.

Mikel,
Welcome to the forum!  Brisket huh?  Go check out the thread titled "briskets in Pig Country" in the non-Bradley section of the forum.  The Brisket Channel is on the air with correspondents in two locations reporting on briskets. :)

Noticed you mentioned you were on chemo.  Hope that all turned out well for you.

Welcome Mike!   Another Kentucky boy, I see..

Don't worry about those temperature swings.   When you have a load in the smoker, those won't be nearly as drastic.   You might throw a couple firebricks in the bottom of it to help regulate the temps.

Welcome Mike.  Glad you are feeling better.  Brisket or butt or is a good first choice.

Thanks for all the greetings and well wishes, couldn't get a brisket together to smoke today so I'm going easy and doing some bacon wrapped chicken breast tonight.
