When I have times like that I rememeber a sign at a church. I saw it shortly after the Northridge CA earthquake in "94. I was feeling down due to the extensive damage to my home and the loss of most of anything breakable that we had owned. It was on one of those signs you see in front of many churches that usually has a thoughtful saying on it. All it said was "Thank God for what you have left.". It got me thinking that while I lost a lot, I still had a lot more left than some people. From then on when things go bad I try to look at things from that angle - what I still have, not what I may have lost. Usually works for me.

Thanks guy for all the support.  Batman of BBQ came over yesterday and we spent about to hours trying to locate the leak.  Everything looked normal for a 15yr old roof.  We are hopefull it was just a rare thing because of all the rain we have had here this week.  But only time will tell....  Thanks again guys.  And thanks for coming by to help Batman.

Snelly - I had something similar happen when the remnants of Wilma (I think?) rolled over Illinois as a sub-subtropical storm...

Rain found it's way in where my garage roof is attached to the rest of the house.    Ran down the inside of the garage wall and made a small mess.  Fortunately, it stayed away from the drywall in the inside.

Do you have any of those NEOPRENE boots? The ones that go over plumbing vents in your roof?...
Over time, the edges crack, and in a strong rain, more water than you might think can get in around them.
If so, smear some "black goo" around them.

Snelley, Glad ya'll looked for leaks before pulling the trigger on a new roof.  After 32 years in the construction business, you get your fill of chasing down leaks.  15 years isn't old for a shingle roof.  Most leaks in a shingle roof are usually in a valley or somewhere flashing is.  Shingle roof installers quite often can't even spell flashing much less install it correctly.  Unless, you have some physical damage to the middle of a roof (i.e. a limb fell and poked a hole through a shingle) - there's not likely gonna be a leak there.  Also look out for condensation.  We've lived in our house for almost 30 years and have never had condensation on the ceiling until this year.  We have a metal ceiling in the den, and had condensation dripping from it.  We've had a very wet, very humid, and hot summer for Nashvegas, and it turned out the thermostat for the power vent had somehow been turned up and was not venting the attic as well as it should.  Turned it down and it solved the problem. 

Don't even get me started on the Hail damage scams!

The boots on my roof are tin and we did check them.  They looked good.  I still have the tarp on the roof and I am going to keep it on until after Labor day when I get back in town.  The spot has dried and no new leaks detected.  So either we have covered the leak or it was just a freak thing with all the rain we have had...

We checked the attic for condensation leak and didnt see any.  There's not much room to move around up there but I did check the ac line and it is wrapped and doesn't run over the part of the roof that leaked...

Again guys thanks for all advice and well wishes.  Things have gotten better somewhat with my wife and I's birthday's and we are taking a mini-vacation down to my family's beach condo for a LONG Labor day weekend.  The truck will be fixed today so slowly but surely we are heading in the right direction.  Now if it would just stop raining enough so we can get our softball season started.  3 rain outs in a row...

Living in a coastal storm area (Hal -- Surfside is our local beach area, I live about 15 miles away), I've seen water leaks from a perfectly good roof due to wind blown water.  It's amazing where it can get to.

One thing to watch and look for is a water trail above where you see drips.  A lot of roof leaks appear well away from the source area where the water is coming in.  A leak will occur and before you see any drips it might follow a rafter or truss running downhill for quite a ways before dripping off.  The run can even be between the dimensional lumber and the decking, then drop to the lower side of the dimensional piece and continue to run before finally falling off as a drip.  Look for evidence of water stains on dimensional pieces and then look uphill for the origin.

Hang in there Snelly, I know it's a major pain and a drain, but let's all hope that the worst you will face for the foreseeable suture.

Come to think of it, Snelly, we had a sideways snow up here a few years ago...
Managed to get in Squirt's attic, melted down the wall and made a heckuva mess.
It's snowed plenty since then, and I don't think he's had another problem.

Hal, Surfside is a real community now, as TX coastal communities go.  It's not what I would call relay developed, but they do have mayor, etc.  It's gets built up and then about every ten years or so gets a good cleaning by a major storm.  Ike did a pretty solid number on Surfside.  The older houses got cleaned out, those built to newer standards survived.  It's mostly a weekend beach community, barefoot and T-shirts kind of place.  Oh, and they still have all the mosquitoes.
