Labour Day Pork Butt - Saved by the Bradley Forums!

every Labour Day Weekend my parents invite all the neighbours at the lake over for a big meal to celebrate the end of summer. everyone always loves the BBQ the Bradley turns out, so i thought i'd do up a shoulder.

there's usually a ton of food so i picked up a small 6lber at my butcher and went to work early Saturday morning. coated the butt with a light layer of CYM, and layed on the Bad Byron's. this was my first time using Bad Byron's (courtesy of a trade with Mr. CRG!) and boy is that some good stuff.

fired up the PID at 4AM for a preheat and was locked and loaded by 5AM. the lake is 1 1/2 hours away so i had planned to be out the door by 4pm. this gave me 11 hours which i thought was sufficient. that's where i ran into problems... ::)

just my luck it turns out this butt was one of those damn stubborn ones and it stalled in the 160s for a LOT longer than i thought. by late afternoon the butt was only 170F IT or so. i didn't have time to make a post and wait for answers so i frantically scoured the forums for some info. luckily i came across a couple posts about preferred IT for butts, specifically a post by Habanero Smoker who said he always pulls butts at 175F and doesn't usually FTC. this was extremely comforting!!!

practically on my way out the door at 4pm i pulled the butt and it was ~173F in most spots. i FTC'd on the drive down and pulled everything once i got there. it pulled fairly easily - good start! i threw it in a crock pot and splashed it with some Scott's and turned on the heat.

so after thinking my pulled pork was going to be a complete disaster, let me tell you, everyone at the party thought it was some of the best pulled pork they had! it was very moist and tender!

Great save!   I've toyed with the idea of getting a 12 volt powered crockpot for those "oh sh*t the food isn't quite ready yet" driving trips..

Nice job monty.  Yep, some of those butts can be darned stubborn!  I'm sure the FTC on the way to the lake helped it some.
