I semi-volunteered to cook some butt for some friends. What is the suggested lb/person ratio I should use. All are adults ages 25-60 (more towards 40's). There will be buns for sammies and some sides, maybe potatoe salad, etc)

if you  are going to do a pulled pork, then your  looking at an 1t of 190 and a cook time of 1 hr to 1 1/2 hr per lb and figure about 40% shrinkage, as for the  amount per person i would figure 1/4 to 1/3 lb per person depending on there appetite, Along  with other fixings. I would do a Large 40 to 45 lbs of pork and let the people help themselves.

potato salad, macaroni salad, bread sticks, chips and maybe  baked beans as sides would be a good options.

im sure others will chime in on this as well

the 1/4 to 1/3rd is the general rule I follow but if they are big eaters than allow for 1/2 pound but even with the 1/4- 1/3 there should be enough to cover the big eaters

Is that before or after shrinkage?
So 20 people * 1/3= 6.6lbs /.40 for shrinkage = 14.5 lbs of butt?

A pair of 8 pounders would be safer..

Actually, 20 pounds raw would be safer.   Plenty of leftovers that way.

On the 20th I am cooking butts for 150 people and there will be alot of other things (sides) to eat.

To be on the safe side I am using 50% loss and 1/3 lb per person.

So that will be 100 lbs of raw butt.

I would go with Squirt on this one and have left overs.

I third the STC analysis.

Always better to have leftovers than hungry guests with no food left.

Make sure you get some cole slaw in there too.

When my daughter does the sales at the college football games she figures 1/3rd as the general rule. I found a scoop at GFS that allows a scoop to equal an estimated 1/3 pound of pulled pork, this works very well.

Yeah I agree on the coleslaw and I hate the stuff, but I had a not to great pulled pork bunwhich one day at the ferry terminal and with the slaw it was edible. Oh and I thought this was weird stuff till I made some but that "vaunted vinegar" is wicked stuff on pulled pork.

That's a great idea for mass production.
