Adding a second element to OBS

Does any body have a parts list for adding the second element to a OBS i have a Auber PID, but i want all he protection i can get. the fire photos are shocking and i don't want it to be me. thanks i will order the parts from yard and pool if they have everthing.

The parts and tools needed can be located at the beginning of these two articles. For the modification you are making, the only parts not listed are the In-line Fuse (1 needed) you need to order the right one for your smoker, the digital has a different part then the original. Also if you have the original you will need to order the Temperature Sensor (1). Many are adding a second element protector cage. It is also a good idea to order a new Heat Element Reflector, as a backup. All of which can be ordered from Yard & Pool.

One more suggestion
The spot welds on the heat reflector are very weak. I rivetted all the joints that were spot welded for extra rigidness (is that a word?)

Just wanted to add a note, i noticed this modification is for the non digital version. I have the digital version and adding a 500w element is risky for the
relays on board the pc board, so i added a seperate relay inside the casing that can hold the extra amperage ( also takes a load off the board )
i also added a second in line fuse not to overload the existing one as its only rated for 10 amps.
a switch to turn off and on the second element is a good idea to switch between 500w and 1000 watts for cold or hot smoking

Welcome to the forum.

There are two Second element modifications. The first was made by Mike (Mr. Walleye) on his digital, so you may have been looking at the wrong directions. Those instructions are for the digital models. The PID takes the load off the generator, that is why it is recommended not to do any of these modifications without an external temperature control device, such as a PID. Even with the OBS, if you wire as in the diagram, there is no extra load on the temperature controller, and the PID takes the load off the the generator.
