So i cam across a old proofing cabinet that is not functional at a restaurant supply house down the road.  My question is, how hard is it to make into a smoker?!?!  Not a cold smoker but a actual smoker!!  I was looking at getting a smoke adapter, but the heat control was the wondering part of the deal.  Is this cost effective at all?  The cabinet is $125 and it is big so i am not sure where to get heat elements and also i need some way to make the heat exact for smoking.  I am sure someone oh here has built a smoker out of one of these but can't find a thread on it. Mainly if someone can get me a idea on the material and where to get it, it will give me some idea of i cam going to aloud to use my allowance for it LOL!!

The cabinet is 6' x 30".
The smoking lamp is lit!!!

Most proofers are insulated to keep the insides hot/warm. If needed i can hit mine with 280*
Going to install a Bradley smoke gen this weekend to it.

Nepa what are you using to get your heat source??  I saw your post with your cabinet i am guessing mine is the same just minus to heating unit.  Was looking for some sort of heating element or heating source that i can control with a thermostat of sorts.........kind of going into this really green and not sure which way to go to make it work they way i want it to :)

My proofer had all the electric in the bottom slide out. I just needed some new parts.
The element is located at the bottom which can get to 280-300*
I use the original water pan (modified) for the wood chipe but found i had to install a toggle for the fan. The fan was blowing air over the element and that kept the wood from smoking. Now i just hit the fan when needed.

I had a smoke daddy to the side but am going to install a Bradely smoke gen.

The element.

The plate with the 2 squares is a slide out that can be placed in any slot in the cabinet.

WOW Well that leads me int he right direction!!  Wish one of you guys was closer to help me get this off the ground!!  Mike does some beautiful work from what it looks like!!  I wish he was my neighbor LOL!!!  I don't really have a use for such a big smoker but like the idea and would love to have it around, but the wife is not to happy about the idea of ANOTHER piece of equipment on the back porch!!
