I just received an email from Rick.  Rick is in charge of the Locust Grove Baptist Church competition I was in last year.  He said looking forward to seeing you and your team, but no propane allowed.

OK boys and Girls do you think we scared them?  LOL    I'm really disappointed I wanted to kick some butts this year and I know Steve and Morgan  ( aka TestRocket)  did as well.   Guess we'll be looking for other places to go cook!     ::)

Could you gut/mod an old BE to burn lump charcoal instead?

Not the way they are set up, but if I could find a outer shell that would hold charcoal then I'd have something!   ;)

Tommy...You could pull out the burner assembly on the SRG and then add a 3-4 inch tray bottom with a Tommy ring that could be loaded with charcoal on the outer side of the ring. The heat from the charcoal would travel up the sides of the emitter like the burner flame. Have the tray slide in and out for easy re-loading of charcoal. I would love to see their faces if you returned with a charcoal powered SRG and then they realize that their plan did not work :D

Bingo.

That's kinda how these things work:

Except you'd have a shell of a BE around it.

tommie,
I have an UDS (ugly drum smoker) that you are welcome to use as some type of shell. It is basically a 55 gallon drum with airholes on the bottom, hooks for racks, and a weber cover. I also have a 1/3 of a 55 gallon drum with airholes is that is of any use.
Let me know.

I hate them "make the rules up as you go Organizations". I like that thing STC posted :)

I heard they had their quota of UGLY people so they had to find a way to keep TMB out of the area!! ;D ;D

tommie,
looking at the link the STC posted. The UDS has a charcoal holder similar to that of the ring holding the charcoal in the picture in the link. It is made from the bottom of a cheap charcoal grill. It has handles that you can lower it  (and the BE) into the drum. Or if you used the 1/3 drum you could put it in there and cover with the weber grill cover. Call me if you want to discuss or want pics.

It could be that they are trying to conform with KCBS rules. Maybe they are working towards being sanctioned by them.

Rick is working towards getting his comp certified, reason for no propane.   But given the right scrap yard to look in I might find the parts to make a charcoal Big Easy!

Then I'll really be cooking!  LOL

Oh No! What have I gotten myself into?   :D

I think they are more afraid of your recipes  :), you do have some interesting recipes. It will be interesting to see your version of a charcoal infrared grill.
