I am a first timer, and I just bought my husband a 4 rack digital smoker for Father's Day.  What should I plan to do first?  Any tips, techniques or recipes would be welcomed.

Step; 1) read the owners manual.
        2) season that bad boy.
        3) smoke something.  ;D

Remember to dump and refill the water pan with HOT water about every 4 hr and most of all keep that vent wide open.

welcome to the forum,

read the manual,  season the  smoker and wash the racks and interior v rack and dish... then smoke some thing simple, like chicken, ribs..

also get a remote thermometer to verify internal temps...

do not be afraid to ask questions  we understand you are new to smoking and the  process  of smoking and  we will guide you   along... we all have been new  here at  one time

enjoy

Welcome to the forum. I am happy you "bought this for your hubby" but it sounds like you are the one to get the first smoke done ;D. You might want to try some ribs using Tenpoint5 method. You can find it on the recipe site.
Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.

You are on the right track. The best advice I can give you is to do as much research that you can before you dive in. Most of your research can be done here (you have hours and hours of excellent research here) and the recipe site which was mentioned above.

And don't worry or fret about mistakes. Odds are what ever you smoke will still taste great.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em
