Has anyone ever tried smoking hatch chiles?

I have a bunch of them that are probably going to go bad unless I do something.  Thinking about cutting them in half and smoking them.  Would appreciate any advice on how to do this (i.e. should I roast & peel them first, or will the skin soften up in the smoker)?

There is a post from DTAggie.

He did them last year and this year.

When I get them, they roast them at the store in a big mesh tumbler with gas/propane jets shooting heat/fire across the tumbler.  I do not actually smoke or roast them myself.  I would think you could split them, de-seed and smoke for an hour or so at a high temp then vac seal and freeze for future use.
