I been tinkering with wanting to make one of these for awhile. After seeing the one Expat posted that threw me over the edge.

Biltong/Stick/Jerky cutter

Just a prototype.
The blade is a planer blade that i wire wheeled.

Made a basic design. Did not use any glue, just brass deck screws to attatch everything. The hardware is all SS.

Got it all sanded. And in the house where i took it all apart.

Rubbed it all down with butcher block oil and re assembled it. The blade i rubbed down with lard.

Going to get some SS wing nuts tomorrow.

DisplacedCoonass

Very nice looking, especially after the oiling.

Looks like something you'd buy in one of those Amish craft shops.  Too bad you're moving or you could grow a beard and go into business.

Looks great Rick!! You making more??
Bacon is the Crack Cocaine of the Food World.

Be careful about calling yourself and EXPERT! An ex is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure!

That's really a nice build, after staring at it for a time I was thinking about routing a channel in the wood to hold the sausage. Also thinking about some sort of a curved blade to handle the angle of entry. I have seen some sort of curved blades before from woodworking stores.

Keymaster

Nice, Looks like it will do cigars too ;D

SouthernSmoked

Nice job Rick!

Tried it out yet?

So the plane blade looks nice but i just cant keep it from getting oxidized and turning dark being its not SS.

SO

I have a blade design change.

Going to have to re work the handle and add some sort of safety. Really dont want to cut the wheel in half.
Going to re design the bottom cutter block as well.

Really starting to shape up. Think maybe a angle block sort of v top would be nice. With the round plade pushing down and the block holding center might work nice. Just an idea though.

Wow nice work Rick. I don't think I could have done as good a job as you did.
I like to walk threw life on the path of least resistance. But sometimes the path needs a good kick in the ass.

If you use a circular blade, won't you need a slot in the cutter block so it will cut all the way through the jerky? Either that or some kind of "roller mechanism" (Think pizza cutter).
