Hello, all.  I have been perusing these forums for a week or so now, and it has been a major factor on deciding on which smoker I am to pursue.  I believe I have decided on the Original, and it looks like I should pick up a PID controller as well.  If anyone has any input or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!  I want to start out with the right gear to have the best chance of success.  I know there is definitely a learning curve, but a push in the right direction could not hurt.  Any information would be fantastic.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you all!

Think your decision is a good one unless you need the room of the 6 rack.

Welcome to the Forum.

Good way to start OBS WITH PID. Might also want to pick up a Maverick et732 and some bubba pucks.

Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks for the quick reply.  For now, as I'm learning, I'm sure the 4 racks will be suffice.

Hello.  Thank you for the advice on the Bubba pucks.  I had not read about them, and will definitely order some.  Would the Mavericks be simply to do a second check on the temperature?  Please take it easy on me, as I must stress I'm a beginner, but I thought the dual probe PID would take care of the temperature monitoring and regulating?

The pid will do it all for you except the Maverick allows you to sit on your couch with a beer and monitor the temp on case something goes wrong.

Thanks, devo.  I might have to pick that up as well!  THIS is the correct PID - http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_28&products_id=151?  I've noticed a few setups on here with the modified displays in the smoker assembly that looks pretty nice.  Anyone have a fancy way to mount the dual probe?  Also, is the free hanging probe recommended over the wall mount?  Thanks again!

Welcome to the form, Jgold! I remember from my Naptown days that's around Ft wayne or Warsaw. Lots of good info here, enjoy your smoker!

Hi jgoldwood and welcome to the forum.  I'd go with the free-hanging probe.  You can put it where you want it.

Hey if you are  coming here just to ask a whole bunch of dumb questions then you came to the wrong place. I already did that.  :D :D :D Welcome to the forum, you will love this place. These guys are great and they put up with me.  :o The hanging probe is good so you can put it where you want and the best place for it is right under the lowest rack with meat on it. It gives your PID the best idea as to the accurate temp that the food is being subjected to.
I like to walk threw life on the path of least resistance. But sometimes the path needs a good kick in the ass.

Yup I think they have you covered on the probe. I made the mistake of ordering the wall mount, not a big deal but after i drilled the hole where they recommend I found out in a hurry it gets in the way. I now just put it on a rack under the meat I'm doing with a alligator clip. Duct taped the hole back up and I'm happy  ;D
