i have done the upgrade from the obs to the 6 rack dbs super excited!  my first project is 6 racks of st. louis style spareribs wish me luck.

its in the 30's here seemed to take like an hour for my smoker to reach 250 is that normal?

Yeah, probably.  I don't think I ever got my OBS over 235, even in summer.

If you add a second element, which is a popular option around here, it'll take about 10 minutes to reach 250*F.  Mine never seemed to have enough "horsepower" until I did the dual element mod.  Now it flies along.

is it easy to add a second element?  im not very handy.

It takes a bit of wiring and some drilling but it is not all that hard to do.  Certainly nothing like rebuilding a motor or something.   :)

The simple and short version of how to do it consists of drilling two holes in the sides of the reflector to mount the insulator of the second element into.  Then take two 3-4" pieces of high temp wire and run a short loop from the first element to the second.  If you decide to do this and want a more detailed explanation just send me a PM and I'll be glad to help if I can.

Here's a how-to article with pics that differs slightly from the way I just said and the way I did mine.

I have the 4 rack DBS and was having the same issues. I put it in my shop which helped in the cold weather but that meant I had to be there to monitor temps and just keep an eye on it.

Today I tried something different and was very happy with the results. I think it worked better than having it in the shop and I could keep an eye on it from inside the house. It was also pretty inexpensive. Not too pretty but it works in cold weather. In the summer you could hide it somewhere to show off that nice looking smoker.
