I ate horse meat growing up in the 60's and 70's, then they outlawed it. Guess I'll have to go to Arby's and start stocking up on the Horsy sauce :o

Every supermarket carries horse meat here and it is a common item on restaurant menus.  I like it better than beef.  We can  get either colt meat or adult horse meat just like veal and beef.  In Basel are two specialty horse only butcher shops.  We use donkeys for salami as well.  Great stuff.  Ate my first horse burger in Paris over 20 years ago.  It was cooked "bleu" and was delicious.

Finally they did something.

I have eaten horse meat quite a few times and like it. Just hope they dont up the $ on it like buffalo.

Most of the horse meat that was processed here before the ban went to other countries and was not consumed by Americans... I don't think that will change.

But anything is possible. After all Americans love the McRib. So how about the McEd? :o
Natural Gas 4 burner stainless RED with auto-clean
2 TBEs(1 natural gas & 1 LP gas)
OBS(Auberins dual probe PID, 900w finned element & convection fan mods)
2011 Memphis Select Pellet Smoker
BBQ Grillware vertical smoker(oven thermostat installed & converted to natural gas)

Hello fellow countryman! (if you're Swiss!). Lived in Switzerland late 80's and also remember alot of horse steak. If I remember correctly, when ordering a steak it defaulted to horse unless you requested it beef. Leaner, healthier meat. It's our "head space" that is the problem.

I remember eating it here in the USA but it was never made illegal. They just quit employing inspectors for horse meat. So the couldn't sell it. When they did they had problems with peoples mind set and would label it beef. Now that is illegal. If the price is good and the availability is good. I'll jump on it quick. It's a bright red meat with a fine taste. Tastes like the best beef you can buy.

Don you crack me up.

I have a couple of horse lovers at work and I like to tease them about making sausage out of them.  I check to see if any of them have a cough or limp every Monday morning. We have the to give away section in the paper and it has horses in the paper almost every week. The add always says that they will be a great pasture mates. {they should say a great way to turn money into horse crap} I tell them it is a lot easier then hunting elk in the mountains. Shucks,  they bring them to you in trailers. My only problem is what do you do when the former owner calls as says they want to come over and want to visit Flicka. I tell them to bring some potatoes and carrots. Flicka has become quite fond of them. I would then lift the lid on the crock pot and have them throw them in.

Now for all you horse lovers out there just lighten up. I haven't done it yet.
I was raised at a state fish hatchery and I used to help my dad grind horse meat to feed the fish. That was in the 50's but I still remember digging into the bucket of horse meat and throwing it to the fish. They hit it like a school of Perana. I still have the grinder we used to use.

I have read alot about horse meat as well as horse milk...I would eat it WAY before veal...ever been to a veal farm? It is aweful...I am not a bugs and bunnies gal...but my god...the little calves stuck in the boxes...they cry all day and night...sorry I go all with Clarisse in Silence of the the Lambs here...the screaming is god aweful...

No veal in this house...fowl...no prob...

I like horse meat! Veal only had it once when young and don't really remember the taste. I am a hunter. I believe in killing for meat. But make it quick and clean and no suffering. Veal to me is torturer and shouldn't be allowed. And I'm not with Peta or any thing like that. If they want to kill a calf at an early age thats their right but I don't back any form of abuse to anything. Now that said I sure hope they open the market this time in the USA.
