I've recently found out that someone within my building I work in is an authorized Traeger dealer and at the same time I found out that another person within my building owns a Green Mountain grill, so I did some investigation on both of the grills as I may be interested in one in the distant future and I don't see a huge difference between the two.  Can anyone tell me the benefits of one over the other?

Another thing I do not understand is how do you not get a smoke flavor on either of them when you want to just grill and not have the smoke flavor?

The higher the temperature in a wood pellet grill the less the smoke.  When you grill you'll probably be in the 400º + range.  You won't get much smoke.  The smoke is more in the 180º to 250º range depending on the type of pellet smoker-grill.

Ditto!

Even at the high temps, you are still burning wood, so there is smoke.  But these pellet grills are essentially convection ovens, so that smoke and hot air is whipping around the insides of the cabinet in a maelstrom at the highest temps.

I added a smoke daddy to my Traeger to get more smoke at higher cooking temps..
Natural Gas 4 burner stainless RED with auto-clean
2 TBEs(1 natural gas & 1 LP gas)
OBS(Auberins dual probe PID, 900w finned element & convection fan mods)
2011 Memphis Select Pellet Smoker
BBQ Grillware vertical smoker(oven thermostat installed & converted to natural gas)

So, any experience between green mountain grill versus traeger.

My buddy and me both got into pellet grills 2 years ago, I did the Treager 070, and he did the GMB. We go back and forth about temp swings and such and have had some minor glitches that were handled very well from tech support from both company's. The main thing is that we both are getting great results on our cooks. GMB has gone a step further than Treager with the remote temp controller which is really cool. Like some have said, the Treager Jr at 299 at one of the Costco Road Shows is a great way to get your feet wet at pellet cooking. There are better cookers out there like MAK and Memphis, but how deep do ya wanna go?
