This is primarily aimed at residents of the lower mainland in BC....  Greater Vancouver specifically.

If I were after a decent sized home grown, non-supermarket, non-plastic wrapped turkey for Christmas, where would I start looking?

I've been given the honour of being in charge of Christmas dinner this year at my in-laws.  I'm excited to do it...  to be honest although I've done many a Thanksgiving dinner away from my family, Christmas dinner has ALWAYS been the exclusive realm of my mother and in the last few alternating years, my mother-in law....  so it's something I want to get right!  When Christmas is with my own family on the farm in Saskatchewan, which is roughly 37 of the last 40, we always have home-grown turkey...  we raise pretty much all our own meat and chickens and turkeys have always been part of that.  So...  I've been spoiled...  I've never really found a store bought plastic wrapped bird that can compete with what we raise ourselves, so if I'm in charge of dinner, then only the best will do I'm afraid ;D ;D

So, if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it....  I'd like to get my order in early!

We always get our non medicated turkey from JD Farms in Langley. they are a little pricey but they are excelent birds. http://www.jdfarms.ca/  also you could try this place http://www.ladybugmanor.com/about.php. I have not tried them but I have heard good things about them. I will check around for some other options for you. We live in the lowermainland and only use freerange birds.

My brother was getting the JD farms turkeys when he worked out there. They are awesome turkeys.

Thanks, I'll check those 2 out!

No problem, when you going to be in town, maybe we could get a few of the members in the LML together for a drink or three at on fo f the local establishments.

Hey sounds like a plan!  Thanks for all your replies....  the JD Farms gobblers look like winners!

I fly in on the 21st, leave again January 4th, but probably spending New Years down in Seattle at my sisters place.

Sounds good, I will try and set something up for when we get back from Mexico, Usually go down at Christmas since we have ungrateful kids and they have not blessed us with Grand Childern so we have cancelled Christmas and go to Mexico instead.  ;) Just do not know when we will be back yet but I will get something happening for around December 29/30 if that is good.
What part of the LML are you staying in? Makes for planning a get together a little easier, since you will be the guest of honor we will come to a pub near you as there are members scattered all over the LML.

I'll be in Steveston (Richmond)...  although to be honest by the 29-30th I'll probably be in Seattle for 3-4 days over New Year.... if nothing else to escape the in-laws and subject my wife to HER in-laws as my folks will be out from Saskabush by then to converge on Seattle for a second Christmas.

We'll play it by ear and maybe get something sorted closer to the time?

Sounds like a plan, we do not have our trip planned yet so I do not know when we will be in town, but either way there should be some type of get together even if (sniff, sniff) I cannot make it because I am in Mexico ::)
