Just got home from my seeing my first competition(I didn't enter).  I got to meet BBQ Pittmaster Tuffy Stone. He's just as nice in person as he seems on the show.  Got to participate in the people's choice judging. So I got to try 15 different pulled porks. Still like mine the best. They had a couple of competition cookers set up selling food. So I got a pit beef sandwich. Tried my first beer can chicken....wow. And got ribs from skin and bones , wasn't real impressed. But they were ok. I'm not knocking them, they were the prettiest ribs I've seen, but it just tasted like they were rubbed with honey then sprinkled with old bay.
this is a sweet rig.

They're delicious, the batter makes the cookie soft so it just melts when you bite it

Fried Twinkies and fried Snickers bars are also fantastic!
Life is short, eat the dessert first!

Looks like you had a great time, and know you will continue to enjoy it. I've met a few celebrity pitmastes, and find are really great people.

Fried anything is good. Smoking isn't a big thing around here, this the second year they've done this comp. and there was only like 26 teams. Maybe 100 other people there, and they said this year had a lot more than last year. I don't know anybody locally that has a smoker. They had the Governor of Maryland sign a proclamation making whomever wins the Maryland state champion.

There are quite a few KCBS sanctioned events in WV, MD, PA and VA that may be close by to you. Go to the KCBS site and click on Events; then you can search by state, or date or both. I know there is Sam's Club National Event coming to Laurel, MD on 9/8. Those are fun. They are held in in Sam's Club Parking lots. Troy Black will be there and he gives a lot of demo's (grilling), and you will get a chance to meet him. Because of the prize money, they often draw top teams. On 9/15 Sam's has their Region 5 event in Chesapeake, which consist of the top winning teams of the five "local" Sam's events in that region. But there are many other KCBS santion events, so check the schedule.

For the KCBS event you went to; having 25 or more teams, and the Governor's Proclamation making the event a "State Championship" is important for the competitors. You need both at a KCBS event, and win the Grand Championship; to be eligible to be entered into the drawing for the Jack Daniels Invitational.

There may be more then one state championship per state. I know it sounds strange, but that is how it is arranged. Maryland has quite a few KCBS events that are State Champions; I believe New York have around nine State Champions. Only one State Champion is selected from each state to be invited to the "Jack" and that is done by a lottery. So the more Grand Championships a team can win in a particular state, the more chances s/he has that they will be picked at the drawing for that state. In several New England states (RI, CT, VT, NH), there is only one State Champion event. Those draw the top teams, because the Grand Champion automatically goes to the "Jack".

No problem! I got a little long winded.  :)

I guess that's what happens after I judge a contest both on Saturday and Sunday. ;D  ;D But this is currently one of my passions.

No I really appreciate all of that info and everything else you post on here. I've been wanting to do the class to become a judge but they don't do it anywhere real close to me. I also would like to eventually start competing but I'm booty even close to doing that financially

There may be an established team near you that will be glad to take you on as part of the their team. You don't have to make a complete commitment; many team members only cook with the pitmaster when they are available for the weekend of the event. Contact a local BBQ Society, they are often helpful in hooking up people who are trying to establish a team or are looking for more members.

That way you can experience what it is like, and make a better decision on whether you would want to invest in competition BBQ. Once you get your equipment, each event will cost you $500 - $1,000 in fees, travel and meats. Also working on a team, my give you a better understanding of what type of equipment you should purchase.
