I think I might just go get me a Mac for my office.  I will stay with XP for gaming... but this Crap is getting old. If I ran my business like MS runs theirs I would be out of business.

...which is why I:

a)disabled automatic updates
b)don't use Internet Explorer
c)don't use Outlook
d)all the above

IKnowWood

I have gotten ride of XP entirely and now just run Mac OS X.  Its got all I need.  I am not into online games, RPG maybe but not over the net.

Thanks for pointing this out Olds.  I couldn't figure out why this was happening.  I followed the link and it showed a "fix" (regedit)  I followed the instructions and it seemed to fix the problem.  I would switch to mac in a heartbeat, but there are a few things that are beyond my control right now.
Grab me another stout, or scotch, or martini, or........

Well this one is an IE problem, so I agree disable the automatic update feature in XP. I never use the automatic update, and I don't download any MS updates until about a week after they have been released, and check to see if anyone is having problems. My feeling is, the reason why Macs are safe at this time, hackers want to go after a software that has a lot of users, and MS is the largest. As FireFox browsers have become more popular, hackers have begun to target that software now.

Without a doubt this is so true.

Now that Mac is using Intel chips I got a feeling where this is going to go and our Mac Brothers are not going to be happy at all.  All I can say to them is welcome to the real world of a pain in the shorts.   :o

Olds, maybe not.  With new software / firmware Apple has provided the ability to enable booting to XP on the same hardware.  So for those who want XP they got it.  For those who don't you got it. For those with both needs. They got it.

The industry dependance on Windows is still going to be strong and still be there.  I Think Apple is enabling same hardware for both to sell hardware.  But still keep seperaton.

There is talk of much better Virtualization which would enable XP to run better but not run core.  So at least some aspects are improved.  But who knows.

All I say is.  Don't buy a Mac.  I don't want more hacker creap.

IKnowWood  I understand what you are saying. However, market share is market share and I willing to bet the Mac wants more of Windows' share. The only way I believe they will get a greater share is to create an OS that will run Window's based programs.  That overlay program of  Mac's that allows Windows' programs to run is an overly system hog and everything is slowed way down.

Only time is going to tell, as the real money is not in the unit but the software. A Mac running XP is not really going to do to much for Mac's bottom line.

The virtualization I speak of is not running on the OS, like Virtual PC, which I ditest as its to slow.  There is a new version which may be bootable to XP and OSX will not be running at all.  Performance is faster than Virtual PC almost likke a real PC running XP (just an older one).  I don't care much, I still have no use for it.

Sure Apple wants more PC market share, but just enough.

The Mac running XP will do little.  Just offering a solution to a small niche group who want to tinker.  The niche may grow it may not.  They were just squelching voices.

I've always run Automatic Updates BUT I never let them install without my authority. After a week and all that Zdnet & Cnet discussions are read then I decide to do or not do.  XP Pro does seem a lot more stable than XP Home. After installing the last patch I expected the same activeX problems to show up that was described but for some da*n reason it functions the same as it always did. Have had no HP scanner problems associated with the patch either.. I was ready to do the regedit thing but doesn't look like needed so far. Sure raised hell with AOL though. Had to do an uninstall and reinstall on it to get a couple of things to work again.
Seems they fix 4 problems and create 5 more.   ChefBill

I finally installed the latest updates. I read the details of the IE patch, decided I don't need those security features right now, so I did not install it. I'll let MS release IE7; wait for the bugs to be worked out, then install a full version of IE7.

IMO it is safe to disable the automatic update. Microsoft always releases it's patches the second Tuesday of each month (if there are any). So every second Tuesday or shortly after I go to the update page to see what patches are necessary, and if I want to install them. If there is a serious immediate threat, MS will release a patch as soon as they develop one. When MS releases a patch early, I'm on a few XP e-magazines that I will get a notice through one of them.

This acticeX patch and workaround is wrecking havoc at work.  5,000+ employees are having problems across the enterprise, another 10,000+ are about to have them.  Some organizations are good enough to not push the updates, but there are still some users who do the auto updates then don't know what happened.  Impact to some custom apps deployed across the area are really being bad.  Critical work activities are coming to their knees cause of some users went ahead and did the update.

Lovely...   Me and My team found new issues that are driving us nuts how to work around.  At first we think "User Issue, can't talk and push buttons at the same time" but the more we look into it the more insedious it gets.  Some of these users are not smart enough, or in most cases to smart in most other areas to NOT USE IE and use Firefox.

Arrggg.   Thanks MS and Thanks ActiveX, and Thanks EoLas...
