My 11 yr old Grandson is spending two weeks with us while his folks are on vacation.  He's helped make breakfast sausage, krautwurst and tomorrow summer sausage.  Then smoke some picnics.
But today he joined me on a trip to see a different kind of smokin'.  The Union Pacific Railroad still operates a large steam engine, UP844.  It was on its way from Cheyenne to Omaha to be displayed in conjunction with the college world series.  We caught up with it coming into Fremont and then met it at the Fremont station where it was serviced before continuing on.  It sure is easier to photograph stationary sausages than it is a moving, thundering steam engine!  I think I was more excited then my grandson!!

And no, that's not a sausage in the upper left corner,
I did a better job with my Grandson and the Conductor.

So you see, there is more than one type of smokin'.  Thanks for looking.

awesome shot, I have heard rumors that UP is working with Pomona fair grounds for the Big boy # 4014  to restore it, currently it is still at Pomona fair grounds , I hope that UP will restore it, would love to see it run and bring back some history of steam

Ragweed you made some great memories, that your grandson will never forget. Kudos to you. I'm sure that engine was smoking.

That is just too cool!  Paducah KY, where I live, used to be a big railroad town back in the day.  One of the Illinois Central manufacturing sites was located here.  The building is still standing and a company refurbs diesel train engines there now.

Paducah has a steam locomotive with a mailcar and caboose attached proudly displayed downtown.

Gosh, I hope you're right.  If they fired up a Big Boy, I'd even take Amtrak to go see it!  But don't hold your breath.  The Big Boys burned coal.  It may not be possible to convert one to an oil burner.  That's one of the things #844 has going for it.  It's an oil burner and also the newest steam engine UP had at the time of dieselization.  But I'll keep my fingers crossed just the same.
