Cures question

Well ive been dying to try and make some canadian bacon. But i havent been able to find anywhere in town that sells cures or mortons TQ etc. So i was looking at Habaneros guide to canadian bacon and his basic dry cure recipe.
So the basic dry cure calls for:
1 pound/450 grams pickling salt
8 ounces/225 grams granulated sugar
2.4 ounces/68 grams pink salt (InstaCure #1; or DQ Powder; or Prague Powder #1; or Cure #1; or TCM)
Makes about 3 1/2 cups

At a bulk store i found "Himalayan Pink Salt" looks like... pink salt.
Is that what i need for the recipe?

No that salt is just regular seasoning salt.  Pink salt is
Labeled as cure # 1 or one of the others you listed.
Where are you located?

Saskatchewan Canada. Not much around here. debated just ordering some online if anyone has recommendations of a site for that. However there is a bigger city about 45 minutes away that has a few places that i might be able to find cures. Just havent gotten around to going there yet.

also do a  search for insta cure # 1.... you  may  also use  mortons tender quick

Jb sausage supplies is the place nearby I have been meaning to check out. I have to take a trip down there soon to stock up on meat at costco anyways. Nothing to cure till then!

Since you are in Canada the Stuffer's site would be your best bet. On that site you need to order Prague Powder No. 1 (Prague Powder #1), that is the same as Cure #1.

Do not purchase the Morton Smoke Flavor Sugar Cure. That is not the same as Morton's Tender Quick, and the two are not interchangeable.

So, funny story, last night i was looking up Mortons Tender Quick and my girlfriend happened to look at the screen and said "Oh we sell that at work" Turns out this entire time I could get it at the grocery store she works at which also happens to be literally across the street from our house. Its a smaller grocery store so i never even thought of checking there for something like that as even our main stores like superstore and wal mart dont carry it. Lesson learned i guess. 2lb bag for 6.99, good enough for me.

Unlike cure #1, you don't use any additional salt when making sausage. For this very reason I don't like Mortons Tender Quick. I would still try and get cure #1. Mortons Tender Quick is OK but it does have a lot of added salt.

Good you found some. I've bought it at grocery store. Some butcher shops also have cure #1.

I am in Saskatoon and always buy Morton's at Safeway. And my cure #1 I get from the butcher shop...Prairie Meats to be exact.
Bob and Doug Mckenzie encompass all that is Canadian ehh.

Thanks devo ill keep that in mind.
Guess i never checked safeway either, apparently i was looking at all the wrong places. Ill have to check some more butcher shops for cure#1
