Most important hint: DON'T FLY UNITED AIRLINES!!!!

Well, first of all, let me say that if you never visit our 49th state, you will truly be missing something. The scenery is breath-taking, the people are wonderful, the food & fishing are great. Going into the trip, we took the attitude that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing so do it right. We're going back!

The first week and a half we set out on our own, driving to Denali, fishing in Homer & Kenai, partying with the Blue Angels in Anchorage, flightseeing in Talkeetna. We wound up in Seward to get on the boat for the ride back to Vancouver.

Not to say we didn't see some things from the boat that we wouldn't have seen on our own without a little more effort on our part, but we had a lot better time the first week & a half. All the ports the boat docked in except one were tourist traps all the way, 20 different jewelry shops, t-shirt outlets (maybe Olds would like this aspect) and the like. We won't do the boat again, but it was an OK experience for first-timers.

You can't believe how little beer you will drink when it's $3.50 a pop! Want to switch to soda? It's a bargain at only $1.75. They even make you pay for drinks when you're in the casino. Need some laundry done? It's about $12.00 for one day's worth of clothes, but then again, they do press your underwear.[;)]

I'm overwhelmed at the amount of posts that were made while we were gone. It's going to take me weeks to read them all. If anyone has something they want me to directly respond to, please email me & I'll get right to it.

Likewise, in order to not make this longer than it already is, if any of you want more details, suggestions or instructions on how to smuggle beer onto the boat[:D], email me & I'll give you the long version. I'll post some pics later when I get our new-fangled camera figured out.

Fantastic trip, worth every penny. Kummok, Mrs. Kummok & Papa Kummok are wonderful people[:)][:)][:)]. Did I mention NOT TO FLY UNITED AIRLINES?!![:(!]

Hey Welcome back Kirk,
Ya there is a schwack of posts, even I cant keep up, and I'm reading every day.  Ton of new members - good stuff.
Hope you had a great holiday - Alaska is somewhere I want to visit one day also.

LOL - sorry this might get long, but I just thought of a great (not so funny for some guy and his family) story.

Before we started having kids, my wife also worked at a bank (competitor).[:(!]  Lethbridge is about 1 to 1.5 hrs away from the Can/US border at the Sweetgrass/Coutts border crossing.  Aside from one town and a village, Leth is the first place you can hit coming out of the US at that crossing.  At the very south end of town, the first Bank you will hit coming north is the branch Mrs Whitetail worked at.

One day she is working and a guy comes in to exchange some of his Greenbacks for Colorful Canadian Coin.  She inquires of his plans drawing up casual conversation, and she is informed that the gentleman is driving his family to Alaska...

"Yep, I figure another three hours" - well the wife is dumbfounded as three hours will just get you north of Calgary and it is five hours to Edmonton.  On top of that there is a [}:)]load of land north of our capital before you get near the top of the province.  She asked for more of an explanation, and the guy produced his map.

Well - (not implying anything negative to the US - understand that - you guys know lots about Canada) the MAP MAKER decided either not to worry about Canada, or was trying to save paper and get the whole USA onto one sheet.  He slapped Alaska right in the middle of Alberta superimposed over top of Canada[:)][:)][:)]

Poor SOB[:I]
