So about 10 years ago, Dad, my brother, and I figure out we can apply for moose and elk draws in the same year.  About 4 years ago, we figure that its kinda stupid to all get drawn at the same time, so me and my bro apply for a fictitious area to increase priority without getting drawn.

2005 Dad gets drawn and bags a moose.
2006 - brother and I flip for the draw, I win and get drawn.

This is a long time in the making, as I only ever applied for elk before, therefore this is my first moose (Dad's first last year).

Olds I need your cat here - what to do...what to do?

You old timers read about my great uncle Mike a long time ago.  That means generationally my Dad's uncle.  Anyway he is no longer with us, but with lots of memories and good times.

Anyway, Uncle Mike gave me most of my rifles.  At the end, he handed over the last of the guns to his nephews, and I got his 7x61 Sharpe and Hart.  He used to call it "the cannon" and rub his shoulder when I was little.  I witnessed that gun bring down some nice bull elk...when he brought them home that is.  I was under 8 years old at the time.

I have never shot the gun before.  It never fit into my menu of game, and when it did, I always had Grandpa's 30-06.

So anyway here's the plot.......

I'm going to disassemble all loaded ammo because it is varying lead weight and unknown powder and assembly dates.  (side note - you cannot purchase factory shells for this gun anymore.  It is a collectors item and most people bored out the chamber to fit 7mm Rem Mag shells and spoiled the gun.  A few internet places sell brass to fit, but it has been remodelled and does not have the proper caliber stamp)

I shall hand load 3 boxes of shells and get the gun sighted in.

I plan to take the gun out for my moose hunt only.  Hopefully I will be successful and take a bull moose this season.

My point is to try and bag my first bull moose with this rifle and then retire it.  I will not shoot it again aftwards (I only have 3 boxes of potential brass, and it's obviously old, so I can't go on indefinitely).

It will then be handed over to my first son at an appropriate age, and it will be his decision to take it back into the field or keep it on the shelf.

What's funny is I can't decide whether I'm more excited about the moose or using the gun (I think its the latter)

Thanks for reading.......
