Venison steaks?

What a great forum! I'm new to this and know very little about smoking.

While my dad was still hunting deer back in the 60's, he took his venison to a meat market and would bring back some steaks that were smoked and had a string in one end for hanging. The meat was somewhat hard and we ate it by cutting thin slices from the steaks. We never cooked these, but ate them from the wrapper. I have been told that this was likely done with cold smoke. Can anyone offer suggestions how to do this?
