:( :( Having been diagnosed a few days ago with Type 2 diabetes, I'm having to accept that I may not be able to enjoy BBQ any more. If anyone has had to deal with this, I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thanks much!

I have had type II for years. I just watch my sauces, carbs on the breads. My doc says keep on living with what I like to do. Just check your blood sugar often with your meter. I take 1 a day Januvia Pill for my type II.

A lot of my friends also have type II and they still enjoy my Q. Like Nepa said it is important to monitor your blood sugar level often. Watch the carbs and keep a good protein/carb balance going and you'll be just fine. There are some good books out on the glycemic index of foods that really help me figure out recipes for meals when I have these folks over for a feed. If you need help finding some books let me know jfalls55 and I'll dig them out and get you some info on them. Take care.

Since I've only known about a week, we're still trying to get things stabilized out on meds. I found out about this during a surgery for a wound debriding. I guess I scared the hell out of my family doctor when I just about 'coded' on the operating table for a routine surgery and they had to 'LifeFlight' me to Lincoln. Sorry about that Doc! Anyway, that recipe info would be appreciated iceman. Thanks again!

Geez...glad ya made it out of there.  I've spent a lot of time with diabetics (fortunately, I am not one....yet), and I know it can be a scary disease.  As long as you behave yourself and do the naughty things in moderation, you can live a mostly normal life.

Your primary physician should refer you to a nutritionist, so s/he can explain your dietary options. I'm not one who believes if the glycemic index. Like most areas, some professional believe in it, others say carbohydrates are carbohydrates. You will be going through a lot of stages, fear, some depression, feeling victimized, anger etc. There is a major life style change, but as NePa states you have to live life. Type II Diabetes is generally easy to manage. The American Diabetes Association has a good website with plenty of information.

I forgot to mention, last July marked my eighth year of Type II.
