Well I went to Burlingtons Ribfest at lunch today and was rather diappointed.

I walked by all the ribbers and picked out one that I thought had some nice looking ribs.  I spent $13.00 for a half rack and that is what I got, a 1/2 rack.  I ate the first few ribs and they were dry and almost like cracklin' from a deep fryer.  I figured they had been on the grill a bit too long.  The other half of the half rack which was neatly hidden below the first half was fairly burnt.  No cracklin, no dry....  burnt.

I suggest you choose your ribs that are on the grill when you order them as opposed to having them handed to you.

Every ribber had their own sauce or rub for sale but it was clear that this event is to move ribs.  I was hoping to see something about a competition, or amateurs trying out their luck over the weekend, but it looks like a rib selling party.  Nothing wrong with that, just a bit dissapointing as I was hoping there would be folks selling doodads and thingamajigs and maybe some whatchmacallits that we all need when cooking up some fine ribs.

My ribs are sooooo much better than the bunch I got at lunch time.  Methinks I will be smoking up some ribs this weekend to get over the disappointment.

It is amazing what I used to think was really really good.  Now I can make it myself I find most of the BBQ you buy in restaurants are not as good and overpriced.
Grab me another stout, or scotch, or martini, or........

Yeah - I chuckle to myself when I hear folks discussing going out for some good BBQ.  ;D

I went to a Ribfest here in the Hudson Valley; but that was really a BBQ Championship. So there was a variety of foods. The food I purchased was all good. I went on the last day, and selected the vendors who had won awards the previous days. My main complaint, you would be standing in line for 30 minutes or so, and when you get up to the window, they put a sign up stating they were out of the food you wanted, come back in 30 minutes.

I guess hanging out around here you can get spoiled. You get to a point that when you go out for Q you're disappointed because you can make it sooooooo much better at home. Practice, practice, practice, diet, diet, diet, it's a vicious circle but someone has to do it. :D ;D

to make myself feel better I smoked up a pile of ribs 210 degrees for 7 hours, mopped with sauce an hour before I removed them, then FTC'ed for an hour.  MAGIC!  Now that is ribs.

Hey Stu,

My buddies and I got introduced to Pulled Pork at the St. Lawrence Market Ribfest in Toronto some years ago.  It was nice.  They combined it with a Beer tasting festival.

Unfortunately they don't seem to do it anymore, although I think they did one in Scarborough this year which is close to me.

I agree with you about the selling thing.  Those Ribfests are popping up all over the place.

I went to the Toronto Ribfest this year (actually in Mississauga at Centennial Park) twice.  First time was on my way to work about two hours after it opened and had truly great ribs, only from one place though worked great no line-ups.  Went again on Sunday afternoon huge lineups and had ribs from three different places, and none of them came close to those first ribs.  Idea I'm trying to get across is that I'll be going as soon as possible on the first day.  Have to figure the quality really drops off after serving thousands of racks to people waiting in line for a half hour plus
