I am about to begin building a brick smoker. My plans include installing a BS Generator, and some sort of heat element. Cabela's seems to have burner a unit available. I plan to make this a top load, round unit 30" in diameter, 30" tall. The top will be copper bowl like they sell for patio wood fires.

Has anyone else undertaken such a project?

My concerns include:
Temperature control
Heat absorption/loss by the brick
Thickness of the adaptor (how it will fit into the brick side of the smoker).
Venting for the unit, as this is electric, is any venting required?

Can't answer most of your questions but I would recommend fire-brick.  I have a relative that has a brick outdoor wood smoker and heat retention seems to work pretty good with this type of brick.

I agree with Wildcat. In the past I have worked in a foundry and a fire brick will help in insulating( keeping the heat in) instead of heat absorbtion.

Hi DAWG;
Here are a couple of pics of the smoke generator mount plate and a couple ways to control heat. I mounted heating elements to a full size bakers pan and just slid them into the smoker for heat.
Just click on the pictures to enlarge.

Mechanical type bulb thermometer

Generator mount through smoker wall

Heating element mounted on tray

Heat controls mouinted on back of smoker

This is as thick an opening as the mount plate will go using the collar. Any thicker you have to remove the collar

50 amp PID controller for the smokers

Hope this gives you some ideas. :)
