We are not certain why , but my pancreas went into over drive last week and by Tues nite of this week it "had a burn out." After that I went to the ER and Thanksgiving dinner was a small brown pill. Got through it but it was a bitch. Nothing by mouth.. no water or food. Only a saline drip with no food value. Thus giving my pancreas a rest by shutting it down.

I feel great now. Just ate a great meal. Still at a loss as to why this happened. They offer reasons such as to many hours, to much stress, not eating enought, drinkng to much etc..  At least I know now what to look for should it come back.

The turkey did not get smoked but Mother step in and roasted it.  I hear the family dinner was great.

Later, I'm tired now, I will tell you about the great white rabbit in the X-ray room of ER.

That is a heck of a scare Raye. Glad that you have it under control and looked after. Too many scares this past week, my Father (81 years old) just came down with a case of Shingles...very painful for him, but he is on the mend as well.  Take care Olds, and take it easy.

Glad to hear you are doing better Raye.

Curious to know what the symptoms were if you care to share.  Some of this chit is scarey especially when you don't know what the symptoms are or they appear to be something else.

We almost lost our daughter when she was 5 due to what was diagnosed over the phone as a stomach flu (yah it was going around at the time).  2.5 days later an emergency appendectomy removed a near fatal ruptured appendix.

Wow Raye.  Glad you recovered.  You may have to cut down to just one jar of Ice's sauce per day!
Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth.

How this started off is last week I felt "off." Next I notice a hardening in the middle of my stomach. It seem to grow a little more each day. Then by Tues night of this week after dinner while outside I threw-up six time without warning within 30 seconds. The last one was so strong it almost knocked me off of my feet.

After that my mid-section grew quickly. There was no point of it I could touch without much pain. I normally wear a 34" waist, but I would have had to have pants in a 38" waist line to button them to the top. That is how much I blew up in size. This happen so quickly that it could not been more than an hour or two. By Wed. afternoon I knew I had to go to the ER.

Now is the fuzzy part that I quite don't understand. It seems my pancreas was putting out more than it should thus effecting everything. I mean everything from my loins on up to my chest. It also effected itself and it became a circle.  The only way to stop it was to shut down the pancreas.

It was shut down by the stoppage of my food and water intake.  Thus nothing by mouth. As I posted earlier the saline drip contained no food value. It did contain potassium.

It turns our that my massive throwing-up on Tues was a blessing. I had only eaten that one meal at 6 pm and I threw up around 9pm. Thus the last real meal I had eaten was on Monday. This ment there was less fuel to cause the pancreas to continue into "overdrive." Thus the shut down was effected more quickly. My pancreas now rested went back to normal, by Friday and at 10 am they allowed to go on a liquid meal. If no problem I was to be discharged by 3pm. Originally they were talking 5 -7 days with nothing by mouth.

I left the hospital @ 2:55 pm. Went home and two hours later ate a great meal.

One last item concerning the level of pain this can cause. I have a very high tolerance for pain. Years ago I had to have a tooth deeply drilled out-- almost all of the inside gone. I hate novacaine, and while I could handle the pain of the high speed drill it was pushing my limit. So the denist used a slow speed drill. He drilled out that back tooth with no novacaine or anything else. If I was to rate the pain I went though due to my pancreas at a 10 then that drill out I would only rate at a 3.

There is no doubt in my mind today that this was brought on by my lifestyle. I now have had to accept that I can no longer run like a house on fire. This past week was a wake up call that my age is now upon me.

Thanks for the info Raye.  Much appreciate the 411 on the symptoms.  Never know when something like this can happen and knowing what the symptoms are can help in knowing you need to hit the ER.
Take Care, and take it easy.
