My PID is ready to try out

Well after gathering up all the items needed to make my PID control for the BDS I'm done and all that is left is to connect it to the BDS and try it out. I'm rather lucky because all I had to purchase for the project was the SSR. Since we build industrial furnaces where I work I was able to get everything else for free because we will not put used devices in our new equipment.
I have a timer which can be enabled or disabled that will shut off the heat after whatever I set it for, one minute to 999.9 hours. I can disable the timer if I want to let it just run till I choose to stop it..
Also I set one of the alarms in the controller to act as a high temperature limit, so if for some reason it keeps heating and never shuts off, it will drop out the SSR when it reaches 325 degrees F to prevent any damage to the BDS.
The second alarm starts the heat timer, so I can set it to start the timer at any temperature I choose and when the timer times out it will stop the heat. This way if I want to start the timer when the BDS reaches a desired temperature of say, 200 degrees then shut off 16 hours later it will do that.
I can also ramp up to temperature with this controller if I choose to do so. In other words I can set it to heat up at, for example, 25 degrees per hour or whatever I choose to set it to. This may be useful if I need to slowly bring something up to temperature.
The smoke is still controlled by the BDS but it will plug into the bottom receptacle on the side of the PID box, I have the receptacle wired so the top plug has a circuit breaker for the heat and the bottom plug has its own circuit breaker for the smoke generator. The thermocouple plugs into a T/C plug right above the power receptacles.
Now I need to simulate a load and do a couple Autotunes and fine-tune it so it controls like I want it to. Then it will be time to try it out.
My offset cold smoker box just needs welded together and painted then it will be ready to try out also.

Holy crap Pensrock! Nicely done!  8)

Soooo.... When does production start?  :D

Thanks everyone. I build electric enclosures and work on industrial furnaces every day. To make one like this and having to purchase all the parts would cost more than the BDS does. Actually the enclosures I build at work look a little neater than this one does, I was using a used panel and tried to use the existing holes or put new holes where they were hidden or covered up. Then I got in a little hurry trying to get it finished, so it could look a little better.

Ontrack, I just got home from Va. on Friday. I left Tuesday and drove 11 hrs. to Knoxville. Worked at a plant there on Wed. then drove to the Charlotte area Wed. afternoon. Worked in a plant there till noon then drove on I81 the whole way to Winchester on Thur. Then got home Friday around noon.  :)

Mike, yours works so is cannot be too primative.  :)

FLBentRider, I do not understand it, I know there was an 'Add to Cart' and 'Checkout' feature on my post somewhere.  ::)

iceman

Very nice pens!!! Your in for some fun with that baby!

Wildcat

Wow!  And to think I had a little difficulty understanding mine!  Very impressive indeed!
Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth.

Very impressive. That is quite a set up.

When I was testing my DigiQ I used two aluminum pans with 4 pounds of sand, plus 1 pound of water in each to simulate to small butts.

Habs, great idea to simulate a load. Thanks.  :)

Wildcat, When you work around temperature controls all the time it gets easier. I'm sure you have learned a lot from using your new controller already.  ;)

Iceman, I hope to try it out next weekend. This weekend is pretty much shot. I was away on business last week and now I'll spend all weekend getting caught up on what I missed doing last week. I still need to get my taxes done!  :(  BTW did you ever find the 'Hot Salt'? I have to get groceries tomorrow, I can look to see if I can find some around here if you like.

And to top everything else off a bear got into my bird feeders while I was away and now I have that to clean up and repair.

When you crossed the VA/TN line (at Bristol) you were about 5 minutes from me. You could have brought my PID with you. ;D

:o Yikes Pensrock, I thought mine was heavy duty, you take it to a whole new level.. ;D  ;D

Ontrack, I drove right through Bristol on the way to Knoxville. I have stayed in Bristol several years ago at the Holiday Inn off of I81, just for the night. Coming home from the Charlotte area I went north on I77 to I81 then north the whole way through Va. So your in Bristol Va. not Bristol Tn. right? I guess thats how you got your handle... on-track. You must live fairly close to the track? If you would of had the smoker on I probably would have smelled it and been able to pull right into your driveway. LOL  ;D

yul, I actually thought about putting a PLC, (programmable logic controller) in and a small touch pad to replace the switches and light, but that would have been too over the top even for me.  ::)

begolf25

Pensrock,

That is very impressive. Makes my PID look like an old BETA video player..lol

begolf, like I told Mr. Walleye.... mine may have a few more bells and whistles but as long as your works that's all that matters. BETA player LOL..... you know you may have just given me an idea. Theres plenty of room in the enclosure for a CD player...... hmmmmmm, tunes, smoking and a cold beverage..... sounds like a winner to me. LOL  ;D ;D ;D

Ontrack

Pensrock-I live on the VA side about 15 minutes from BMS. The "Ontrack" comes from the miserable way I spend my days-inspecting the railroad tracks. Let me know the next time you pass through, maybe we can grab a bite to eat or something, and you can bring my PID. ;D
