Nice fish, Big Red! I went out for my first fishing trip of the season last Sunday. Poked my nose out of the bay, decided it was to lumpy and bumpy, circled back in and tied it up. Went home and smoked a mess of beef ribs. I couldn't get the surf so I went for the turf! So, you're one up on me--I still haven't wet a line in local waters this year. Good on ya.

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone! The only fish I'll keep to eat are crappie and medium sized Walleye (Turn the big ones back to fight another day). In my opinion they are the best eating fish. No Salmon or trout down here and I don't care for Catfish.

Before coming to Alaska (waaaaaay before, like when fishing poles were made outta wood! ;) ), I fished for bass and I can see that your's is a really nice catch BigRed! Congrats!!

I'm with La Quinta on the letting the big ones go, (EXCEPT that NO feeder King salmon I catch is going to escape my freezer once it lands on board, and spawners which are dying anyway). I could easily get excommunicated for saying this in Homer, but I've got a real distaste for the fishing derbys that are held locally, where it's all about size. IMHO, we're encouraging the killing of the exactly the ones we should be prolonging for future fisheries. Doesn't make ANY sense to this old logger's kid, to destroy your best chances of a sustained yield by paying BIG money to the biggest catch in order to encourage tourists to spend money to come and fish the fishery that we're slowly destroying?!?!? :-\

Kummok, are the tournaments not live release?

All our tournaments here are live release only. Teams are penalized or disqualified for weighing in dead fish, depending on the tourney. Most tourneys have fish biologists right there on the docks at weight in.

:) Hey Gizmo, take a look at this picture. A friend and I were fishing a real hot spot for small mouth bass and we lucked into a shoal of them. The fishing was fast and furious for about twenty minutes and then I had a fish break me off, so had to re rig my rod. My buddy was still fishing, taking advantage of my down time,when he set the hook into this fish. When we got him into the boat there was my hook in it's mouth. :o Catch and release does work. ;)

We fish for Muskie later in the year and they are all catch and release too.

That's a good way to save cash on tackle. Catch each other's break offs. Good for the fish too since you get to get the hook out it.
I think I see a problem Yul,
That wasn't a break off, that was a bad knott. No line. :-\ Unless the hook and line next to the hand is your old line. The line near the right edge of the picture does look a little thin.
Those are the most frustrating. I always hate it when the line comes back with a little squiggle on the end signifying the knott slipped.

Either way, that is one nice fatty. Bet you wish you had that do over again.

Great looking fish, bigred. Kind of makes me miss living on the lake. The only thing I fished for were crappie and walleye. My old neighbor there still keeps me stocked with both, as long as I share some of my Bradley smokes with him!

Nope....the King Salmon derby is catch and eat....the halibut derby has some sort of category for releases but the main gig is catch & kill.......

I was going to say the same thing about the knot Gizmo. I just saw a fishing show today that said 75% of all line failures is due to poor knots. Now I believe that. I also watched a show that demonstrated how to tie a palomar(sp?) knot saying that it is one of the strongest, and that is what I have been using this spring. Worked fine on my big one.
