Deb it take about 2 years for a crown or a pup to fruit.  Some suckers will fruit on or about 18 months.

IMO suckers make the worse fruit. The crown makes a good fruit. However, I believe the pup makes the best fruit.

I started out with one pup about 16 years ago. At one time a few years back I had 17 fruiting. I try to keep it down to 6 to 8 plants now. I give away many of my pups.

Once again, cool stuff coming out of Old's backyard that us frosty Canadians can only dream of growing.

I love fresh pineapple.  Wish I could grow that.

How are your avocado's doing this year?

That looks great Olds!  Sure wish we had the climate to grow more exotic stuff here, the wife loves grilled pineapple!

Its amazing what one can accomplish when one doesn't know what one can't do!

Not a one on the tree... not sure why? We did have a warm winter and spring. Maybe it is the lack of bees. I Just don't know.

I just went out and looked and my Loquat tree is flowering but not one d a m n bee. I see several solitary bees and wasps but no honey bees.

This is the fruit of an Loquat tree:

Last year an old house in my neigborhood was torn down. It had a very large honey bee colony.  Now that I think about it my open pollinating tomatos did not bear fruit as normal.

I also looked at my calamondin tree and it looks like its second fruiting will be slim. This is what they look like:

These fruit trees are hard to come by here. Normally you get one from a seedling.  No one here sells them. The skins are very sweet, but the fruit is very tart orange flavor. I love them as my Mother ate them by the groves when she was carrying me. I plop the whole fruit into my mouth and enjoy. Looks like one good fruiting and the latter fruiting is going to be  sort-of-slim.

I got a feeling the loss of the honey bee colony is the problem.
Olds.

EDIT: D A M N I just looked at my grapefruit tree... there is not a good 20 fruits on it... crap!

I  don't know a thing about having a bee hive, but believe me by next year I will, and I will have one.

In my area, if you have enough acreage, and plants to pollinate, bee keepers will set up a beehive on your land and maintain it.

That would be great but I live in a city.

EDIT: Susan just told me she was not crazy about our own bee hive... but she is willing to live with them.

Olds, would a pineapple survive out here in west texas?  We had a boganvilla (sp) for years...it had to be moved in every winter and then back out after the last freeze.  I would love to try my hand at pineapple, if its possible?  And I won't give it mesquite!  ;)

Yes it is possible. Later  today I will do a direct post to you on how to get-er-done~~! (How to start a pineapple from a crown [sorry this year all of my pups are spoken for so you will have to use a crown.] Type of container needed. Amount of Sun light needed per day, and type of fertilizer.)
