Was just checking them out now as to pass the time.  Was also wondering.......do you have to use their seeds in conjunction with the product or can you use any old seed that you want?  Was just wondering if it being of a hydroponic variety if a different seed was needed?

Thanks!

The seeds are in a plastic container that has a foam plug in it. The seeds are in the plug, when the plant grows the roots grow through the foam. Aerogarden used to have pods where you could grow you own seed combos but i dont know if they still offer them.

Thanks, Nepas.  I figured they would have a way where you'd only be able to use their seeds.  Guess if you gotta play the game, you gotta play the game.  Christmas and my B-day are coming up soon.... my folks keep asking me what I would like.... I think this may be it.

Its pretty neat, i have had mine for a couple years now, grown all kinds of herbs, tomato and now chili peppers.

As NePa mentioned they do have them for starting your own seeds.  One of the tray kits allows you to start up to 70 pods to grow seedlings to transplant into your garden.

Yea, it does look pretty neat.  It is definitely on my wish list.  I saw where they have different types of seed combos as well.  They even have a salsa kit.  I would imagine that due to its size, there are things that wouldn't work well in it (corn comes to mind).  But, I would imagine you could have a year round supply of peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, etc.  I definitely would like to give this thing a try.

How are these on power consumptions? I've read they use a lot of electricity, and there are possible problems with the pump.

I'm thinking of giving one as a gift, but if it uses too much electricity it will not be practical for the person on the receiving end.

I think its like a buck a day. I have had mine for 4 years and have not had any problems, no pump or light issues. They have now larger and smaller aerogardens.

NePa;

Thanks for the information. I may have to rethink giving one as a gift, that would increase her electric bill by about $60 per billing cycle. But it doesn't deter me from getting one for myself. :)

You are looking at the cost of running 2 - 26 watt flourescent bulbs for 18 hours a day, give or take a few hours depending on the plants you are growing.

I've got an original (7-cup) for Italian herbs and an Aerogarden3 (3 cup) for flowers.  Love 'em!  Next cycle I'm gonna swap the uses: the Original for flowers and the -3 for nothing but basil (which grows like a weed!).

BTW, if you grow basil and prune a nice long stem, place it in purified water for several days; you have a good chance of it rooting on it's own, and you can start additional plants from it (separate from the AG).
