westexasmoker,

Question: How do you get a 9  pound "rump" without getting into what is called the  "bottom round?" A (sic) 8,000 pound bull~~LOL!

If your butcher is telling you that he can get you a 9 pound rump roast then you tell him I said he is a balded-face-lier.

Next question: Why is it tied? A rump roast (3-4.5 pounds,) bottom round (up to twenty pounds,) a top round (up to 20 pounds,) do not need to be tied. Now I can see why a gormet round (up to 45 pounds,) or a steamship round  (up to 75 pounds) would need to be tied.

Did you tie it or did your butcher?

I'm sorry but that does not--even at the narrow end--even begin to look like a rump.

I'm not saying what you got is not a nice piece of meat.  What I am saying is perhaps you might need to look for another source of meat as a rump cost more than bottom round--which is what that looks like to me.

Olds,

It was labeled rump roast and already tied at the store, and  you nailed the cut its a rump with the round still attached you can see the grain of the meat change should of taken a pic before the rub its kinda like a brisket in that respect.  Bet ya a dollar it'll still smoke up plenty good!  ;D

westexasmoker,

Have you ever tried a top round? Normally I have to purchase the whole top round when I get one, but the eating if cooked correctly is excellent.

After 4 hours smoke, and then

After 24 hours.....yep 24 with AJ, stewed tomatos, green chilis and I put the taters and carrots in also...not a good plan but not horrible, but it was low and slow temp in the house oven at 200.
