Just learned that part of the time when Jan and I are going to be in NOLA, so is Ka Honu. Jan and I are scheduled to arrive 4/22. Ka Honu is scheduled to arrive late 4/26. I've heard they have some fairly decent food in NOLA. ;)
BTW, did I mention I'll pay for the drinks if anyone wants to/can join us.

Well, no you didn't, but if you do (especially after this warning), all I can do is quote Julia Roberts: "Big mistake. Big. Huge."

Seems like a great way to celebrate my retirement! First day of retirement is 4/1. Can't think of a better place or better way to celebrate it.
Offer still stands. ;)
Got an appt. on Monday. if it works out where i can i may pop in for a cold one or 10 :D
YES!!! Probably the next best thing to winning the lottery is having someone else pay for my drinks for two days in New Orleans.
UIS, Monday the 25th? Jan I will be there. Ka Honu will only be dreaming about being there.
Works for us. Anyone else heading that way?
I have marked my calendar. Sounds great!
SWEET! See ya' there Ron. We'll work out the details as it get closer.
Who else?
I'll be in Bayou La Batre on the 29th for a wedding but that's as close as I can get to you guys so have fun! ;D
It would seem to me that if you had to be at a festive occasion in LA on the 29th, it would only make sense to go to New Orleans on the 27th or 28th so you could properly prepare. Then you could drop in on the wedding (only a two-hour drive) on your way home.
Gonna talk to Wifey and see if we can make this happen.
That would be fun!

It would seem that easy but I'm also responsible for pick up and delivery of Mom in L.A. (lower Alabama) to and from said wedding. And besides with the unexpected days off of work because of snow over the past month there is know way for Miss Jan and I to take anymore time off. So party on dude! ;D
TR - Probably for the best - two Jans would to get way too confusing, especially since KyNola's buying.
CRG - Make it happen. Looks like I'm going to have to skip the wedding in Sulphur Springs so won't make the brisket & sausage pilgrimage this year. Just realized how good I've got it when a couple of extra days eating & drinking with friends in NOLA is my "fallback position."
;D
Are you going to get a fried shrimp poboy at crabby jacks what used to be New Orleans Seafood as I recall... or a pizza from Tower of Pizza on Vets blvd near Bonneville Blvd... Two places I never miss when I get near NuAwlins.
John

I don't Drink and Drive.
I'm close enough (3 to 3.5 hour drive) but timing is bad for this year. Congrats on the retirement.
We're staying next month at the same hotel that KyNola is..
It's about a 10-15 minute walk (stumble) between them. 1/2 mile, according to Google Maps.

I think I am still young enough to stumble a 1/2 mile.
I'm just outside the Quarter and have never had any problem stumbling back there (usually from Johnny White's or Coop's Place). If it looks like it's going to be an issue, I stop off for another drink on the way.
Or maybe 5 minutes in a cab...

I usually go up Iberville. That way, if I* need a quick oyster fix I can drop into Felix's (cheaper than Acme and no line if all you want is oysters).

Wifey is thinking about it.
She doesn't drink anymore so she can be the designated lead walker.
CRG, we don't drink and drive either and we SURE don't stumble "home" at night. Too many thugs out for that. That's why God made cabs. We're staying at the Royal Sonesta.
Something for anybody thinking about coming down and staying for a couple days. The weekend starting Friday 4/22 is Easter weekend and hotels will be full. Following weekend beginning 4/29 is first weekend of Jazz Fest. Imposssible to find a place to stay. If you're thinking about coming over for "New Orleans Smokeout....sorta", start looking now. I'm thinking 4/27, Wednesday is the best day for the "gathering". New Orleans will start filling up for Jazz Fest.
CRG, Jan doesn't drink much anymore so sounds like my wifey and your wifey will become fast friends. If your Wifey likes to shop, tell her to come on. Jan is all about walking the Quarter and shopping. She needs a shopping partner!
gonna put internet daughter on looking for a place to stay tomorrow.
I vote for Wednesday and Thursday although, as KyNola says, hotel rooms might be a bit scarce (and expensive) on Thursday night.
OBTW, if anyone is driving in on I-10 from the west and has time, please stop by Wayne Jacobs (not Jacob's) in La Place, LA, and pick up 20 lbs of andouille for me. Ask them to vac-pack it in 4 or 5 packages (extra charge). If not, no big deal - I'll get out there the following week.
Man I would love to be there. My son was born April 24, my daughter three years later on April 23. They will 16 and 13. Just no way I could make it. If it was a week before or after I would shoot down 45 and hook up with CRG to get on over and meet you all. Have a wonderful SAFE time.
Dang this sounds like fun!!!!
But my accountant says I can't even pay attention...
Maybe, I could hop a boxcar ride down there...
Does anyone know if they still have the Baptist Mission on Magazine at Canal?

Oh dear god... I'll be here at home by myself. (getting home LATE from Scottsdale the night before, and Mrs/MIL are heading to Jupiter, FL to watch Spring Training bball that next day)
I can't bail you ALL out of jail!
STC,
Well, since you WON'T bail us all out of jail, why don't you join us? We'll all sit on the Group W bench together!(Have to know the movie Alice's Restaurant starring Arlo Guthrie to get that one!)
BTW, heard from Hal or has MrsD killed him over this?

Last time I was there we ventured down the street to the RS and they had Opera singers out front bellering out some kind of nerve frazzling music. I hope now that I'm booked there they don't decide to start that bellering again, I mean if they can have an Opera singer out front bellering, I should at least be able to smoke up the pool area.......

Weekend before is Easter. Weekend after is Jazz Fest. Wouldn't worry about opera bellering if I were you! :D However, worrying about Hal and CRG bellering is a definite threat, don't you think? :o

Well they also had them dudes flipping around in the street telling ugly people how good they look to earn a dollar. If they can flip around in the street I should be able to cook me a steak. ???
By the way, I hit the box with a folded dollar bill from the balcony in one shot after an obscene amount of beer.......
I am sooooo ready for this trip!!!
I'll help CRG to the curb if you will take care of Hal. But if CRG breaks out in opera I'm letting go of his arm ::)
What the heck is goin on here?
I just sobered up, and I see printouts for planes and hotels around here...
KyNola - How about modifying your original post to include a running list of who's planning on attending and when they'll be there? That way we could find the list easily.
Great, you leave me with Hal. :( You recall he is the guy who stuck his head inside a police cruiser and wanted to sell smoked monkey balls at the Paducah BBQ Festival, right? :D

Guys and gals, if you're coming down. Please post your details on that thread. Good idea Ka Honu. That's why you're the wise old Sea Turtle.
Should I reconsider? I mean poking your head in a cruiser is one thing, but punching a horse???

Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, touch a NOPD horse without the rider's permission. It's classified as an assault on a police officer and if you're lucky they won't charge you after they break your arm with a baton.Quote from: KyNola on January 24, 2011, 07:08:26 PMHow 'bout a new thread "Titled New Orlean's Smokeout...sorta" Roll Call?

After almost 63 years as a guy (including 35 years of federal service) I'm an expert at denial. If there are no photos it never happened. If there are photos, they were obviously photoshopped and it still never happened.
OK I think I have Kimmie talked into the trip. Now she has to inspect the hotel (a women thing I guess) and see if it's good enough.
She is leaning towards going I do believe ;)
I wonder if TestRocket and Miss Jan would go with us? Truck is plenty big enough for 4 folks that's for sure.
Well alright TMB! I've stayed at the Sonesta probably 25-30 times. I think it will come up to her expectations. The Monteleone is directly behind the Sonesta and the Ritz Carlton is a couple blocks away if she would like to check them out too. The Omni Royal is about 3 blocks away as well.
Wow Larry
Got a crew going to show up.......EH

The State of Louisianna has just announced that the National Guard Units in the New Orleans area have been activiated effective 4/25/11 in preparation for the influx of a group with a notorious reputation that has been rumored to be planning to descend on the city during the last week of April. The State spokesman stated that at this time there is no reason to evacuate the city, however residents are advised to initiate emergency preparations. This is currently just a precautionary move as rumors of the growth of the size of this group continues to spread over the internet. Further announcements will be made as more details are known.

LOL that's why Kimmie has stayed with me for 23+ years! ;D ;D ;)
Plus you know how to burn her food just right. ;D

You're kidding right? Hook a ride with Tommy and Kimmie and come on down!
Just got back this evening from a business trip to NO. I usually drive down so the wife can come along. Took pictures of the city to record what it looked like prior to the arrive of THEM.
Didn't win at Harrah's but picked up some goodies at a local store.

Let me tell you guys. That Cajun Power brand is some good stuff!
GR, thanks for peaking the interest. Now....make your reservations to come back down in April!
This is one of those you had to be there stories but I'll tell it anyway.
So the wife and I go to Delmonico (one of Emeril's places) for dinner. She has a fish dish, I have ribeye. The waiter asked how we wanted it cooked. My wife says we want it really spicy and hot.
Lesson # 1- First ask for their definition of spicy and hot before you ask for "really spicy and hot"
The food came and after two bites my eyes are watering, tongue is burnt, sinuses cleared out. Problem was it was not just spicy hot, it was very spicy flavored. So no matter how much pain you were in you wanted more.
First time I ever wimped out and ordered a glass of milk. The waiter also brought out a small dish of milk chocolates and said "the chef said this will help". Then he says, "yeah the staff gets really excited when someone orders their food hot and spicy".
It was excellent food, will do it again next time, but will make sure we are on the same page regarding "hot and spicy.
I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place...but Bob and I are booked...coming in the 25th...leaving the 29th...already lined up house sitters...friends that are cops...does it get any better then that??? Pool...dogs...cops...beer...almost makes us want to stay home...cept.....we're going to NOLA!!! Yeah baby!!!! ;D
