picking it all up as i go along but if the vent is 1/4 or 3/4 open what is the difference does it make, hot smoking a duck now...regards harry

Wildcat

The difference is how much moisture is retained and how well the smoke vents out.  Moisture and/or smoke can quickly gum up and damage your smoke generator.  A general rule of thumb is do not close the vent so much that smoke comes out the opening where the generator is.  Some things like birds have a lot of moisture.  If the vent is not open enough not only can you damage the generator, but you could also find that it is hard to get your smoker temp up.  Some folks simply keep the vent open 3/4 or full open.  Generally there is not much need to close the vent down any on non windy days.
