I wanted a butt but this was all I could find.

It would seem to me that a pork 'shoulder' and 'picnic' wouldn't be the same; go figure.  I decided to treat it like a butt.

Coated with CYM and Billy Bob's Butt Rub.  Into the fridge over night.

More CYM and Butt Rub the next morning, then into the OBS.  It was 28o out.  Took some time to preheat.

There were a few glitches along the way (don't ask).  Wall clock time in the smoker was 14.5 hours for a 196o IT.

Held it wrapped in a luke warm oven over night and pulled the next morning.

It went into the crock pot with some apple juice and Q sauce for a while.  Shredded the cabbage for the cole slaw in the meanwhile.  It's truly amazing how much slaw you can get from a head of cabbage.

The money shot.  It was close to a butt but the meat texture was a little different.  There wasn't much fat on it.

I've done a picnic that way before and it turned out pretty damn good for both pulled pork and sliced pork theres two different meat textures in a picnic.

That hunk of pork has a nice bark on it too.

Call it what you want to, but from here it looks D@mn good!  Nice bark and very nice slaw.

Mmmmmmm........  Tasty.

I saw a couple picnics at Restaurant Depot last weekend.  I may have to give them a shot one of these days.

Wouldn't you just know it ...

Yesterday afternoon my wife says "Oh, you want butt?  They have them at the store I went to earlier in the week."

So off I went and picked up two bone-in butts, about 6 pounds each, for $1.99/Lb.  A little high but hard to find around here.  Into the freezer they went.

Yep, same story here.   Pigs are $$$.   Even at Sams.

If I see anywhere near $1 a pound, I'm going to ask for a case out of the back...     I have a charity golf outing to cook for in May.

You folks need to make friends with your local military and hit up the commissaries.  Just got off the phone with them a bit ago and butts are $1.56/lb and fresh belly is $1.36/lb.  Compare that with the two local places I stopped in at today to find meat and I got $7.99/lb for belly and $2.76/lb for butt.

Shoulder or picnic, the results look good to me.  Your pics are always good.  Finally, shoulder went on sale at Von's this week for $1.49/#, I brought home four as well as a large package of country style ribs also $1.49/#.  Smoke time this weekend.
