I see that a lot of guys are using onion soup mix,  was wondering if anyone has tried Jans Rub on a prime rib.  Not sure what I want to try.  What is your favorite prime rib rub??  Smoking my first rib on Saturday,  getting excited!!!

Salt and coarse ground pepper is all use on Prime rib.  Never heard of using onion soup mix personally.

I've tried pretty much everything on prime rib and always go back to exactly what I use for brisket and for the same reason.  Salt, pepper, and (maybe) some garlic are all you need.  Beef has a flavor you don't want to hide or alter.  It's what's for dinner.

Here is one I did;
Sept 26 2011. Outside temp 60. Smoked a small prime rib about 4#. Put Jans rub on day before and put in frig.
Preheated smoker to 250 then turned down to 225. Put bacon strips on top. Smoked 3 hours using hickory, mesquite
combo. Took IT to 130 and took out and wrapped in foil for 2 1/2  hours. Put in broiler for about 10 minutes.
Pulled out of smoke after 2 hours and 45 minutes. IT hit 130. Came out exellent.

Jan, as in "Jan's Rub" is my wife and I will tell you we wouldn't use Jan's Rub on prime rib.  If you're going to cook it low and slow and by low and slow I mean no higher than 200 degrees and frankly preferably with no smoke here is what I would put on a prime rib.

You will need to find dried porcini mushrooms at your local grocery and grind them up so you have 1/4 cup of mushroom powder.
Combine all of the following in a bowl:
1/4 cup dried porcini mushroom powder
2 tbsps sugar
2 tbsps kosher salt
2 tbsps fresh ground black pepper
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
5 minced garlic cloves
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Mix all together to form a paste.
Rub the paste all over the prime rib. Wrap in plastic wrap overnight.  Next day roast at 200 degrees to your degree of doneness.

Me too. Lots of fresh coarse ground pepper.

I used the famous Zach's Brisket Rub one time on prime rib and that worked very well too (IMHO).  I first put a little EVOO on the "roast" and then the rub and let it set 3 hours before the cookin' part ... However, I do like the idea of the dried porcini mushrooms .. I've used that in many things poultry related, but never beef .... perhaps a small modification to the next one .. Zach's + Mushroom powder !  :)

I am surprised no one has mentioned the onion soup mix,  a lot of the posts I found while searching talk about the soup mix.  Sounds like it is probly good,  but if no one has tried it recently,  maybe it isn't as good as it sounded

With that nice a piece of meat, you just let the beef do the talking.

Smoked up the Prime rib on Saturday and turned out pretty good.  I could have used a little more rub,  but was afraid that it might be too spicy.  I tried the rub before applying it,  and the cayenne had quite a kick.

I placed a pan under the roast,  and put in water and beef broth,  along with garlic, onion, carot, and celery.  While the roast was resting,  I simerred the liquid and used as an au'jus.  Turned out pretty tasty as well.

I removed the Bones and smoked them by themselves, rubbed with Memphis Dust.  They were extremely flavourful.

The rub I used was from 'Amazingribs.com'
Mrs. O'Leary's Cow Crust:
Ingredients
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoons dried rosemary leaves
2 teaspoons dried thyme or oregano
2 teaspoons table salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne or chipotle powder
5 tablespoons olive oil

Vegies for the au'jus
