QuoteHey Manxman, what did you Manxers do to our San Francisco bikers

Hi TomG, there were probably about half a dozen riders from the US riding in the TT this year. One in particular did very well for a "newcomer" but another took quite a heavy tumble. Have to have a look at the programme to see which ones came from SF, who  in particular are you thinking of?

We get guys from all over the world from Argentina through to New Zealand, a couple of Americans have raced here for many years. Gather it got coverage on television in the US this year as well.

QuoteHow's the care @ Noble's?

Ah, yes..... realise who you are talking about now, this particular rider has kept us all busy for quite a long time now.

The care is generally very good, we get visiting major trauma medics including a leading trauma consultant from one of the major London Hospitals who is on the medivac helicopter, injured riders can be airmeded to hospital within 10 - 15 minutes of their accident which is very good considering the course is 37 miles long.

Two of our Orthopaedic Consultants spent many years in Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles in that province so are very experienced in that area of major trauma.

Also it is used as a training ground for army paramedics, apparently including special forces on occasions, so the acute care tends to be very good from the moment the accident happens. People who get through the "golden hour" and get into hospital alive stand a so much better chance of survival.

Riders typically get sent back as soon as practicable to their local hospital in the UK or to a specialised unit depending on injuries... for example spinal injuries go to a UK centre of excellence called Stoke Mandeville whilst head injuries are typically transferred to a neurological unit in Liverpool and we have excellent IT facilities that allow viewing of MRI scans done locally by the experts in Liverpool. However they have to be well enough to be moved first.

Obviously if they live abroad the logisitcs are quite a lot more complicated.

Sounds like this particular guy has a lot of people rooting for him.

Manxman, It sounds as if health care on the Isle is at least as good, possibly better, and most probably a lot less expensive than the chap would get at any of our centers of medical excellence. You seem to have first hand experience with "the system".

Hi TomG

I actually work at Noble's, I am a scientist in the Laboratory which is involved in all major trauma's as well as a large range of other disorders.

I forwarded the story from the San Francisco Chronicle to the local newspaper here. Who knows, they may run a story and raise awareness regarding the fund raising on this side of the pond which may help in some way.

Manxman - This is very thoughtful of you.  :)

Manxman, very impressive, an island community of 80,000 willing and able to support a research oriented trauma center.

Got a result on this, an article was published in a local newspaper today giving a few columns of coverage together with the website:

www.jamescornellfund.org

Nice to think it would help in some small way.

Just an update on this story about efforts in San Francisco to try and raise $50000 to get a seriously injured American motorcyclist in hospital over on this side of the pond back to the US.

Fundraising has now started locally with a local school and top names of the TT motorcycle races themselves all getting involved. For instance a local radio station is hoping to auction some overalls signed by the top riders together with other planned events.

Good news indeed.

It's comforting to know there are still some decent folks around. I always figured what goes around comes around. Heart warming news to say the least. :)

Looks like this guy will be going back to San Francisco next week, local fund raising efforts have raised some £4000/$6400 and the Manx Government have stepped in to pay the outstanding amount required, split between the Tourism Department and the Heath Services Department, to get him back to the US.

8 local people have been visiting him daily, not the same as friends and family from the US but a help at least.

He is more likely to make progress back amongst friends and family.
