Hi All,

I know there have been previous discussions on ordering spices in bulk, but I recently ordered several spices from bulkfoods.com and was very pleased.  The pickling spice (12.48 for 5#) was excellent quality, as were the bay leaves and lemon pepper (also very good prices).  I wasn't pleased with the dired cilantro, but then again I have yet to find dried cilantro I am happy with . . . Ordering on-line was easy and the order arrived within a few days.

Has anyone else used these guys?  Unless I was lucky, I would add them to the list of bulk spice places to visit.

Hi Rob,

Prices here look good--better than Bulk Foods.  How's the quality--anything especially good, or worth avoiding?

Their quality is good. I like them because of the greater choice of different spices and herbs that I use. I haven't placed an order since September, but I am getting ready to order some spices from them. Probably within the next week. I am looking at ordering their pickling spice, probably the horseradish powder, and I want to try some of their curry powder blends.

I use pickling spices a lot. Their claim is that most pickling spice sold by others is loaded with mustard seed as filler, so I want to give theirs a try. I usually use McCormick's Pickling spice, but that gets expensive.

I have used Spicebarn.com with good results.  I know spices could mean everything.  The longer I smoke the simpler I get for my main meats like Brisket and Pork Butts, simple rubs and simple Italian premixes.  I do a little experimenting with my chicken though.

I also order from Butcherpacker.com.  Quick shipping.  Excellent prices.  Anxious to start my jerkey sausage making!  Picked up a Dakotah Water Stuffer, and soon to arrive should be in sausage making nirvana soon!

Here are two places I've used:

Wholespice  http://www.wholespice.com/

The Gourmet Store  http://www.gourmetstore.com/

WholeSpice has a good variety and seems to compare pretty favorably to Butcherpacker on most things I looked at.  The Gourmet Store has a horribly slow Web site, but their variety is fantastic - for example, 6 different types of paprika (the smoked bittersweet is fabulous by the way), and everything is available in small or huge quantities, up to 10 lb. packages, and their bulk pricing is seems to be really good.  they also carry numerous varieties of other items such are rices, pastas, and various grains.

Chez Bubba

I too love Penzey's. Quality is first-rate & prices seem reasonable to me. Maybe it's because they were one of the early "real" spice vendors, maybe it's because I'm a loyal-type guy. Great service & great product gets my business before price.

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?

I agree with you Chez. I have placed two orders with Penzey's; one in September, and one today. The order I recieved in September was top quality, and the prices seem comparable to the others. Their blends tend to be higher priced, but that may be due to the type of spices and herbs they use in their blends.

Just tried a commercial rub called Bad Byron's Butt Rub that was quite good!  Anyone else had any experience with it?  Their website is buttrub.com and a gallon jar (7#) costs $33.  The ingredients and taste remind me a lot of the Wild Willy Rub in Smoke and Spice, but with a slightly smoky flavor.

Hi X, welcome to the Forum!

Tony Cachere looks like its a website that links you to other websites selling spices and stuff.  Is that right?  If so, which site did you find the best?

I rec'd some sample packs(of butt rub) from a friend that owns a grocery store.  IMHO it was overly salty.  I really like all the Dizzy Pig rubs for commercial bought.  They use fresh spices, no MSG, no anti-caking agents or fillers. I guess I'm prejudiced because I sell them but their coffee infused rub is hard to beat.  I did some frenched racks of lamb at Christmas with this rub and a prime rib with their beef rub.  Both were excellent but the coffe rub has a richness to it that is fabulous.
