I'm looking for a good electronic kitchen scale that I can use not only to weigh meat for smoking but also for weighing out things like cures for brining. I'm thinking something that would measure to the tenth of a pound, maybe 10-20 pound max weight, and possbily convert to metric is needed.

I was wondering what other people are using out there and where they purchased their scale from.

I use a 5 lb digital scale. measures in lb/kg and has a zero out.

You can get a decent digital kitchen scale at Canadian Tire, Sears or even Walmart. They are usually a 5 kg scale which is 11 lbs and can be switched to metric as well. They will measure in grams which is handy. The one I have has a tare weight feature which is also very handy, you can put a container on the scale and zero it out so it only weighs the contents of the container. Typical price is around $20 to $40.

Thanks for the replies. Nepas, that scale looks good, but I was looking for one that would go up to a higher weight. I do like the fact that they have zero out functions built into them.

Mike, where did you get yours from?

I can't even remember the brand name of it right now (I'm at work) but I know I ordered it from the air miles site. (I just had to get ride of some air miles  ::) ) As I said in my earlier post just check them out in those stores because as I recall the majority of them pretty much had all the tare weight option. Just make sure you get the 5 kg model.

I have a Escali that goes up to 10+ pounds that I got from Amazon.com a few years back.  I love it but it sounds like you might want something a little more heavy duty.
Tell us what you end up getting.

I'm going to take a look around at a few stores in the area and see what I can pick up. I defintiely am going to need something that cna handle at least 10 pounds in weight and will aslo be accurate down to 1/10 of an ounce (for cures and such).

I'll let you folks know what I end up with. It is amazing all the different little accessories you can end up buying when you get hooked on smoking (maverick thermometer, hi-temp screens, bubba pucks, brines, cures, beer, crown royal), not to mention the meat itself!

There is some discussion on different scales in this thread  http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=7778.0 .  (The thread starts off as something entirely different but ends up talking about scales)

Thanks Deb. I really like the features of the Soehnle model. I just hope I can find one around my neck of the woods in Calgary.

I have the Soehnle Model Digital Kitchen Scale Silver 65055, it looks delicate, but I've treated it fairly rough with no problems. Though it is advertised for 11 pounds, it will only weigh articles up to around 10.5 pounds. It easily converts from pounds to grams, and calculates to 1/100 of an ounce. It has a tare feature also. I got mine off Amazon.com.

Well, I ended up buying an Escali (probably very similar to the one that Caribou has).

I found it at a cooking store here in Calgary. It measures up to 11 pounds, is accurate to .1 ounce, will measure in metric as well, and it has the tare function. I used it last night for measuring out my cure for a brine for some chicken I plan on cold smoking this weekend. I have to say that even though it is small it worked extremely well, and was dead on accurate. It cost about $35 Cdn.

I did try and get a Soehnle but it appears that you can only get them from the U.S., and anywhere that did sell them did not ship to Canada. I think the one I got will work just fine for what I will need it for.

Same one I have (only mine is grey).  I think you'll be happy with it.
