Good morning, all!

If you're anything like me, sometimes you're left wondering what in the world you're going to smoke for the weekend or what you'll cook for dinner that night.  So, I tend to spend some time searching for meals on the web.  I see a recipe I like and start to make it only to find that I thought I had enough of a key spice but actually didn't.  Or, perhaps I want to try a different rub and wonder if I have all of the ingredients and enough of them to do the rub.

I got tired of running from the computer to the spice pantry and checking every single ingredient, so I made a spice inventory worksheet.  I keep a copy of it on my computer as well as a hard copy in the spice pantry.  This makes it real easy for me to look as well as having a handy reminder of what I need to purchase when I go shopping.

I've got the spices and liquids listed that I have on hand, but you can adjust them to fit your inventory.  All of the spice quantities are based on a Cup/Tablespoon/Teaspoon quantity per ounce.  It took me a while to find everything and there were some that I just couldn't find and that equation was loosely based on like spices.

For example, 1 oz of  spice X might be equal to 2T, 6t and .125 cup of spice X.  You can write on the spice inventory sheet (hard copy) of how much you've used and then once a week or month, update that to the hard copy.  Some may find this to be more work than it's worth and others might like this.

I think there is a free program out there that works with an excel spreadsheet.  I think it's open office.  Hopefully someone that knows it will come along.

You can try OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/index.html

Its a free download.  It works real well for many items.  Its an OpenSource product that competes with MS Office suite.

I've got excel, but when I try to open it, all I get is garbage.  Bunch of different symbols and such, very little text.

You may have an older version of Excel.  Habs is really an expert on this stuff and maybe he can help when he sees this.

Can you save it as an 97-2003 Excel Workbook then Tiny Tim or all with the old Excel can open it
I am not sure but i dont think that the Open Office Program can open 2007 excel files

I have the 2003 version of excel and had no problem opening the file.

I clicked the link and it downloaded an .exe file.  I tried to re-name it to a xls file but nope, all symbols like Tiny said.  I am not using a PC, which is likely why.  It might be a self-contained app that only works on PCs.  Oh well.

I'm using a PC though (not Mac or other).  I did spend about an hour downloading and installing the openoffice thing, and that worked for being able to view the spreadsheets.

ETA:  Oh yeah, my Excel version is the 2003 too.

I did the same, spent over an hour installing openoffice. To me, it wasn't worth it. My computer ran to darn slow. I had to delete it and that took time also.

If you have 2003 then when you attempt to open the file, Excel should give you the option to go to Microsoft's download site and download an update patch. I have 2003 and it works fine. First I would make sure that your Office 2003 is up to date. Click on Help and click "Check for updates". Then try to open the file again.
