Mine swallowed a rock. It took a trip to the Vet, X-Rays, and four figures worth of surgery to fix.
Vet said it was way down in the intestines, no way it was coming back out the way it went in, and wasn't going anywhere else.

Thanks Mike!

He's fine, He has to go back to the Vet in the AM, and he allowed nothing by mouth until then.

We will have to lock him in the laundry room when the 5 and under crowd has dinner.  ;D ;D ;D

The hard part is going to be figuring out how to keep him from eating more rocks.

Glad he's doing ok FL.

As a pet owner who has paid for surgery - ouch.

Glad to hear he's fine FLB. We had a Shepard that ate more rocks than dog food and it finally got him one last time. We spent more on that rascal with the vet than on my new truck!!!  :o Hope he can break the habit buddy.  ;)

FLB, man I'm sorry to hear about this situation. I wish I can offer some kind of help but my Sam has a problem similar only it's small stones and pebbles that he chews on.. He usually just drops them out of his mouth, from what I see. God only knows how many nuggets my knucklehead has swallowed. The only thing I can suggest, taken to the extreme, is an e-collar. When you spot him with a rock, give him a zap with a sharp 'no'. The thing  is, you're not always going to catch him. Just my nickels worth.

I feel your pain on the surgery FL....it's damn scary too. Glad it's all ok...lots of relief when you find out your "kid" will be ok!! Our female chews on pebbles and stuff...but usually spits them out...a rock is different. Cetainly makes ya pay a lot of attention next time they go out!!!

Hi FL

Not sure if this will work but you never know
I had a problem with the neighbour's cat always using my garden for a toilet
what i did was sprinkle some of the hotest spices you can find all over the place when the cat cleaned its paws
well need i say more.  Did not hurt the cat at all its still next door but No more garden toilet.
This may work for your dog

Glad he's OK

FLB, we feel your pain - emotionally and financially.  We were about on a first name basis at the Emergency Vet Clinic here when we had our first Dobie.
Besides being accident-prone, he had a very ANNOYING habit of eating doo-doo, not rocks.
Given the alternative, I'd stick with the doo-doo.  YECH!
Hang in there!

Heck, Mrs., Steeler treats the cat box as if it were her personal candy box.  The thought is enough to make me go vegan but she sure seems to like it.  Steeler will chew on the occassional stick from time to time but that's fibre.

I've never had a dog that ate rocks.......I feel for you, FL.  I've got a buddy that goes to the same vet.......I was talking to the vet about him today and the vet tells me that if this guys pets keep up what they went through last year, they just may name the new surgical suite after him.  My buddy's dog takes pills that cost him over $5 per day.  Plus, he had two horses that got struck by lightning last year.......that cost him an arm and a leg.

Steeler....she's a keeper!

Don't know if you have ever watch the Dog Whisperer but he worked with a rock obsessive dog.
Here is a link to the video pod cast on that episode.

This will take a little while to download the video so be patient.

He seems to be OK, he has to go back to the Vet today for observation et al.

Thing about the rocks is, the are the foundation for the play yard. I am going to have to excavate the bigger ones out and replace them with smaller pea gravel. It will be difficult to police 3 acres for rocks. Although he only seems to like the river rocks

I have an E-Collar, and I'm not afraid to use it, I just need to keep the remote away from the four year old.

The Spices might work if it wasn't for the kids. Although he seems to digest our uber-hot kicked up inferno jerky with no effects.

I'm going to put the rock on his collar. I'll post a pic of it tonight.

He's not a poo eater, thankfully.... the breath!

When I'm angry with the wife, I send Steeler over to give her kisses right after she's been in the litter box  :o ;D

FLB, I'm not a big advocate of the e-collars but there are times that they are necessary. Training for hunting is one. In your situation is another. I have to use it on my 2 lab mixes to keep them away from our chickens and guinea hens. They got to 4 birds already. No problem with the labs, my big guy carries them around in his mouth. A great example of soft mouth. :D
