Hello,

Time to refurbish and modify the BDS so that it will maintain a steady and consistent temperature, improve air flow and rectify puck burning issues. I am now interested in making sausage and all my reading here indicates I will have better results if I make some improvements to the BDS.

Can any of my smoking peers provide links or part numbers to help find the correct elements available in Canada for either single 900 watt or a dual 500 wattÉ Also trying to nail down a suitable fan and motor for installation. Seems the guys in USA are sourcing things from Grainger Co. The Canadian equivalent of Grainger is Acklands Grainger and they do not list the elements or fans that are available in USA.

I have searched and searched and it all becomes somewhat convoluted with different sources, different part numbers and different ideas.

Long story short... are there any Canadians that have done the element, PDI, and fan mods that can share info on obtaining parts?
Any assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I did the 500W dual element mod.

I bought my PID controller from Auber Instruments. I have the SYL-2352. You'll also need a K-type thermocouple, an SSR and a heatsink. They sell all those things.  I do not know if Auber ships to Canada.

For a plug and play, there's the Auber Single Probe PID Controller or the Dual Probe PID Controller.

Amazon has the 500W element.  That's the USA link but there's an Amazon Canada, too.  I bought my element at Yard & Pool.

I just upgraded mine about 2 months ago to a 900watt. Bought the element from Acklands grainger and also change the heat wire to a 14guage bought from amazon.com.

Thanks for your input Ghosttown. Could you possible recall or locate the part # for that finned 900 watt element. I spoke to Acklands Grainger and they were unable to locate it in their computer. Thanks.

I found this 750 W heater today and will be ordering it.  Certainly looks like getting it up here in Canada should not be a problem.

Smokers helping smokers!

Thank you Ghosttown. I've got the unit all torn down and some parts are on the way. Don't really want to modify the cabinet or related parts until I have all the new stuff in hand.

Note you will need to make the whole just a tiny bigger and it will fit perfect. I used a small drill bit

Quick connects

I used this for the power plug connector when you open the back as I ran all new wires, also the front face plate light as I kept the light with my mod.

Wire nut where I needed them

Also installed a heat shield behind the element you don't have to but I did to protect the foam on the backside from burning

And last thing you need is a PID, I went with the Dual probe

You went to a lot of effort to put all that information up here Ghosttown. Thank you, it gives me everything I need to order and where to get it. Looking at your pictures it says you do good quality work. The small insulation blanket is a good idea. I'll post some pics when I get it all done.

The enclosure does help alot, rain or snow bring it on and with the new element god help the weather man lol. Glad to help

Peter

P.S I would say the hardest part in this mod was making the brackets for the element. It will take some trial and error until you want it perfect.
