Title: Forum Newsletter
Post by: Tenpoint5 on December 05, 2009, 12:51:02 PM
I have been playing with an idea of putting together a Forum Newsletter. I have come up a newsletter and have sent out a test Newsletter to 9 forum members that I have email address's for. If you think you might like this or want to be involved Please send an email Here ([email protected])
Any comments questions or suggestions are welcome as well

Not sure what you would put in a newsletter about a forum.

Talking about what people are talking about ?   ;D

If your willing more power to the idea.  If I can contribute material/support  I will.

That is very nice Chris.

I think it will benefit those who are not on here as often, with a featured recipe and such.

Kinda like a digest version of the forum.

Well it works here at home (XP box) with both FireFox (although you have to refresh it a few times to get the images to load), and IE.   On my Vista box at work, running FireFox, the layout is totally hosed.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, as it seems to be an isolated case.  ;)

Imail can be squirrely at times.   Have you ever tried Endymion's MailMan (http://www.endymion.com/products/mailman/demo/mailman.cgi)?  It works with any POP3 server.

[edit]

I just tried viewing the newsletter with MailMain, and it came up and rendered fine.

I'm depressed.  I don't have a newsletter.
With everyone signing up and getting them all put in the address book I am not sure who I sent a copy to or not anymore. I will send you a copy Ka honu. Otherwise it will be a couple of weeks before the next one is published. Going to try and get one out every month, if I can. I had some ideas about newsletters sent to me and I am incorporating some of them into the newsletter. As I said before I am learning this program so everything is new to me. I have been finding out more information and learning something everyday.

If you have an Idea or a topic that you know a little something about. PLEASE feel free to write up a little blurb and email it to me or send it in a PM and I will try and get it in the news letter. This isn't going to be MY newsletter. It is everyone's and I really don't mind the help.

The Final copy of the January issue of the Newsletter is laying on the Editors desk. It should be Emailed out here shortly. The Newsletter has received a face lift and there has been several new areas added. The most significant change is the Newsletter has grown from one page to three and I think it will continue to grow. With that in mind the Newsletter will be sent as a .pdf attachment to accommodate the extra pages.
Thanks for your patience

CRG,
That is the goal to make the Newsletter better and better with each edition. I have been in contact with several Forum Members and will be getting their input and ideas. I am also tapping into some of their knowledge in their area's of expertise. I really want to stress this IS NOT Tenpoint5's Newsletter this is the Forum's Newsletter. The more people submitting articles and ideas the better it will be. I am just the guy with too much time on his hands right now that is willing to put it all together with a little help from my friends. Sounds like a song I remember!!

Chris,

For a product review, I received the FoodSaver Handheld Vacuum System – Rechargeable as a gift. I also have had the Reynolds Handi-Vac for some time. I can do a review of the FoodSaver Handheld, or a comparison of the two, or two separate reviews. Let me know, and if so what time frame would I need to get the review to you.

Wildcat glad you liked it.

Habs that sounds great if you would like to do a side by side comparison. As for a time frame there is no hurry, I can put that review in the April or May newsletter

Wildcat;

FoodSaver makes an adapter that fits over your sealer canister hose sealer that will vacuum seal their resealable bags. It cost around $7.00. I had been waiting for one of their free shipping on any order to order one. When they did come out with the free shipping that adapter was out of stock. That would be useful if your sealer is on the counter and always accessible. By the time I write up the review, hopefully I will have one of those in my possession.

Post by: Wildcat on January 10, 2010, 05:05:54 AM
Thanks. That is even better for me since mine is always on the counter. I am in no hurry so I can wait until they can keep them in stock and provide the free shipping.

TP... This is "General" - just throwing out an idea...
We all have the place(s) - generally away from the smoker, for pre/post smoke/grill activities.
This might be the kitchen, but for many of us, we have too much "stuff" (especially to leave on the kitchen counter),
or we make too big a mess for the Mrs...
I know for a fact that Squirt and I both have little corners of our garages semi-dedicated for this.
Heck, look at Ye Olde NePaS Garage...

Regardless, we all have these "things to do" somewhere.
So, why not do an "Equipment Checklist"/"Idea List"?  Maybe best equipment suggestions / best practices / whatever...???
Just an idea...

Scott,
How do you think I feel. I am already working on the next one. I am usually done with the majority of the newsletter by the middle of the month. Then I have to read it and reread it and wonder if I missed something. Then starts the waiting game. All the great authors we have usually have sent their articles by then and we are sending copies and changes back and forth. Everything is ready by about the end of the 3rd week. Then I have to Wait to send it out on the first of the month or close to it depending on my work schedule.
So YES, I feel your pain Scott ;D ;D

Need some help on the newsletter. Each month We spotlight one of the forum members. I usually do a random pick of who to spotlight and ask for a picture, what your real name is, where you live, What the names and/or ages of your family members are, What you do or did for a living, and what your hobbies are.
Here is where I could use some help. If you wouldn't mind send the above information to me at [email protected] I can have a bullpen of folks to put in the spotlight.
Thanks

I know, seems a lot easier to just use a map and compass, but I guess that's old school now. My nephews cringe whenever I try to teach it to them.
Me: "Maps won't die out in the field."
Them: "I'll bring extra batteries."
Me: "What if the unit dies?"
Them: "I don't know"

I'd hate to go to jail or get shot for Hunting where I am not suppose to.

And with your last breath you'd say "GPS".  The other guy would say "12 Gauge".

As of right now any further mailings of the Newsletter will be placed on HOLD. I will be sending a mailing to Everyone asking if they would like to continue receiving the newsletter. If they would like to continue to receive the Newsletter there will be an option for them to reply with. This will create a lot of extra work for myself adding and deleting names. But it has to be done. Until it is the Newsletter will be on hold.

one dickhead...ruins it for all of us. I hope he has the B@lls to even try to come after recipe site.

10.5 every new member gets a letter from the recipe site telling them that they are going to recieve your letter and if they don't want it how to op-out.

If the liability gets to much for you... I will take it over as you become the co-publisher. Let someone come after me.

Now I'm totally confused. How the heck can anyone complain about this, the only way that they could've gotten the newsletter to begin with was to tell you they wanted it and give you their email. If they don't want it all they have to do is say so - so what's the issue? That's how it was spelled out from the beginning.

I'm sorry to hear about one individual, that appeared to have gone out of his/her way to cause a problem. To me it seems deliberate, since that individual had other means to remove his/her name from the list.

I did receive the April issue and will post it on the recipe site as soon as I log off.

Well that is correct and in a manner it is not as clear. When someone signs up at the recipe site they can op-out not to recieve any E-mails from me. Seeing how I author the Organic Corner in the newsletter  I made sure that all of those who did not op-out to recieve an Email from me got one every month via the newsletter.

I personally enjoy and want the Newsletter. I can understand the concerns of e-mail addresses being released to others. I questioned 10.5 how he got mine when I received my first copy and after he explained I had no problems with it. This guy should have inquired about it instead of losing his temper and exploding without getting all the facts.

Sorry to hear about all this.  I guess it's true:  "No good deed goes unpunished."

I'd suggest that registering at the recipe site allows one to opt-in rather than opt-out.

My main email is with gmail and that's what I gave 10.5 for the newsletter.  I had to use my old but still active earthlink account to register at the recipe site (what's wrong with gmail?).  I started getting two copies of the newsletter, one to each account.  Chris explained it to me and it was fixed but it was unexpected.

I sent my email to 10.5 wanting to be added.  The thing that I have noticed in the forums is that things are talked about but a link is not supplied.  For new people like me I would be most interested in knowing were to go find what is being talked about.  There are so many threads that I don't have a clue to were to go to even start looking for the recipe site.  ;D

If someone would be so kind to post the link I would be so appreciative and I will create an account so I don't miss out on anything.

Just a curiosity question? How many people print off the Newsletter for quick reference in a binder or whatever. I have been asked to remove the gold tone background from the newsletter to facilitate faster printing and less ink consumption. Since this is EVERYONES newsletter not my newsletter. I thought I would pose the question. Background or No? Just to give everyone a heads up the May issue will not have the background it will be plain.

My personal thoughts with the background was to make it easier on the eyes when reading, everything isn't as bright and stressful on my eyes. Since I read the thing about 20 times before I send it out and I still miss the little things. Lucky for me I have Habs to cover my butt and tell me when I goof up.

The "paper" doesn't come from old growth forests.  It comes from tree farmers, who are remarkably good stewards of an amazing renewable resource, and they have kids to feed --- and I hope they eat well...  Because, I'm sooooooooooo eco-friendly I even have concern for humans...

Yes, another great newsletter.  Kudos to Chris.

Just a few comments.

The pork puller thingy is interesting but isn't worth it to me, doing one a month or so.  If you're doing 40-60 pounds a week, well ...

I'm buying some tomato plants this weekend so Raye's upside down came in just in time.  Never had much luck with tomato seedlings but this year's pepper seedlings are looking good.

Fat.  Some of us maybe be a little over, myself included.  Look, you're gonna brine the chicken and rub it up with good stuff.  Then smoke and grill it.  And then what?  Take the skin off?

I understand the idea of the "diet" argument and don't disagree that it's good to keep the fat down.  But, crispy chicken skin?

OK, I'm done.

Chris, you ever gonna shave?

It's hard to say pens and I was somewhat skeptical but now I'm a believer.  I've heard of coffee used in recipes before but never used it.

To the best of my knowledge, Marvin imports organic beans and roasts them in Texas.  From that you get a large variety of coffee beans and the rub.

The food doesn't taste like coffee when it's cooked.  It's hard to describe other than to say it's interesting - and good.

Check out Marvin's site at http://www.rodakscoffeeandgrills.com/

All the different coffee there makes my head spin.

This stuff does sound interesting. I often use coffee in my beef roast recipes. Here is one I love to cook in a Big Easy.
http://www.sizzleonthegrill.com/blog/2009/03/02/coffee-brined-beef-sirloin-tip-roast-guest-chef-tommy-bommarito-creative-cooking-in-the-big-easy/

Dad always said "don't add water for moister, add flavor" meaning toss the water and use a liquid with flavor in it such as wine, coffee beer etc...     I miss my Dad, he was a great cook!

OS I haven't deleted anyone from the NEW mailing list. When we had some problems with an individual saying we where spamming him once a month. We sent out a final mass mailing asking that if you wanted to remain on the mailing list that you reply. If you didn't reply then your name was not put on the new mailing list. Must have caught you sleeping that day. If you would send me an email I will get you back on the list. (I save all the opt in emails just in case it happens again I can say here is the email requesting to be on the list)

Another great News Letter. Again, I assume yard and pool did the test article again.

I was really interested in the computer section. I am by no means a computer guru and I did not know you could zip files with XP. I recently purchased WinZip so that I could start preparing everything for a new computer purchase around April of 2011. At least WinZip's ability to send password protected self-extracting files will come in handy.

Windows has included a zip program since 98SE, but like you pointed out; it just has the basic features. I use WinRAR for it's extra utilities.

All I can say is it's gotta be one heck of a newsletter this month. I tried to start downloading from dialup, and the time to download keeps going up and up and up. I'm over 1070 minutes now and it's still climbing. I think I'm going to have to wait until I get back to work to download this one!

There is a pile of pictures in this on Kevin. I will keep it in mind about the dial up folks having problems

Excellent as always but I wonder about the line on page 10 in the Butcher Commentary that says, "The cold also helps in the formation of bacteria."  Doesn't sound like something I want to do.

I read that too. I knew it was a typo. If you REALLY want bacteria to grow ... Don't chill it.

Think Chris has been behind the 8 ball with Family issues. (Death in the Family)

Don't know about this month, but he will be back up and running soon.

It takes time and thought to get this newsletter together.

Again ........... if anyone wants to help Chris with a product review, a special

recipe, forum member of the month, etc. , He will WELCOME the help.
