Title: Hunting and Fishing Pics---Post them here!
Post by: Caribou on August 28, 2009, 05:14:24 AM
Hi Everyone!
With summer down to it's last month and hunting season starting soon, I thought it might be fun to start a thread for forum members to post their hunting and fishing pics.
Next to pics of our kids and dogs I know we love to share our successes hunting and fishing so post some pics, old or new, and a story that goes along with it.
Thanks!
Carolyn

I like the Electra it shoots sweet and I don't have to mess with primers.

Did you like my deer stand?

 :D :D :D
Do you mean the chairs in your truck?
Looks like my " duck blind" minus the truck!
Here's my daughter with the little buck I got last season.
I thought it was bigger than it was but it did have 4 points on each antlers :D
My hubby gave me a tough time because we saw a huge buck later that afternoon!

Yea, we drive out to a field and park behind a big briar patch and sit in the lawn chairs and wait for a tasty looking doe to come by...

Thats a good looking harvest everyone, we had a good hunt last year. With every tag we got a bonus of one anterless deer. Thats 2 for the price of one  ;D
This is the one i shot during high power

Nice bucks Ou812!
I wish we had a tag deal like that.  It's just the opposite here in Northern Idaho, our general deer season is the same as usual with the exception that now we only have one week where you can take does.
It used to be that you could fill your tag with either a doe or buck but we've had so much snow the last two winters they are trying to let the deer recover a little.
Here's the head of my hubby's deer from the last season, it's just the head and the skin attached so it looks a little odd.

Here are a few from Alaska. My wife and I float remote rivers up there each summer/fall. Usually 7-13 days at a time, bush plane drop off about 80+ miles from nearest town. Arctic NW Alaska is one of our favorite areas. These are pics of dolly varden, a close (very close) cousin to arctic char. Many, even in Alaska, call dollies arctic char.

Hi Danattherock!
What great fishing pics! Those trips you take with your wife must be such great times, I would love to experience something like that someday.

10.5!
Great looking buck!  We don't have anything that heavy around here, we need corn!

Easier to do than it may appear. We do these remote trips every year. If you ever want to take a trip like this, I can tell you everything you would need to know. There is no better way to see the "real" Alaska. Should you ever decide to do a trip like this, just shoot me a PM. Or email [email protected]

They're great pics FLBR!
I'm interested in what you did with the gators, and what the wild hog taste like compared to a domesticated one?
Carolyn
Title: Re: Hunting and Fishing Pics---Post them here!
Post by: FLBentRider on August 30, 2009, 06:47:15 AM
Usually sell the hides of the gators for shoes, boots...

The meat... tastes like chicken (NOT) it tastes like gator... breaded and deep fried.

The pig.. it is a much leaner and darker meat than domestic pork. Sort of like venison.

Funny you mention hogs, the other day my niece was traveling on I-80 which runs right past the back of my property. She said she seen a pig cross the road near where I live. I said WHAT? We do not have wild hogs anywhere near this area. What kind of pig, she said a pink one, you know like porky pig but bigger. Now I do not know whats going on because there are no farms on either side of I-80 at least near where I live so its hard to tell where it came from.  ???
But I have the gun resting near the back door in case little piggie comes wandering in my back yard. ;) Won't take long to get the smoker fired up filled with fresh pork. :)

The (game) laws are kinda funny in FL for pigs

If they are in a game preserve (read state hunting area) - there are seasons, size limits, bag limits, etc.

but on private land, they are considered "livestock" you can dispatch as many as you want with whatever you want whenever you want.

Got Howitzer ?

Little ole north georgia buck.
this is my oatmeal cookie buck, i went hunting at my friends secret spot (did not want him hunting alone)
just not safe.
i put my stand on the tree and opened an oatmeal cookie...took one bite and this guy showed up.
we were there just under 40 minutes.
it was december 10th. this guy had run all of his weight off chasing does.
he dressed at 136 pounds 17 3/4 inch inside spread and a 26 inch neck
he was all neck and antlers.

Wow that looks very close to the buck I got many years ago. I was only 13 yo. 10 point, 18.75" inside spread. looks a lot like yours but the brow tines are a little shorter. I could not get it mounted because dad was just scraping by as it was. I have been trying to get one as big or bigger ever since so I could get it mounted, but no luck. Several 8 points and a bunch of smaller ones but not the big one. I did pass up a 8 point one year that was bigger but wanted a ten. I'm still kicking myself for passing him up.

Thanks for the offer 10 point but I have 2 freezers and I should just be able to squeeze it in! ;D ;D

The meat is excellant it is milder than elk or deer, closer to beef!

It was 105 degree's out that day in the desert so speed is of the essence to get it processed. When we come off the range there are a couple of young guys one a taxidermist the other a butcher and they have a refrigerated trailer they built. We pay a premium to have them skin it and process it. It is worth it not to spoil any of the meat. I have shot a huge trophy one a couple of years ago without a broken horns, that was my once in a life time hunt. This basically was a meat hunt for us, the oryx fight all the time and break their horns so the trophy hunters do not want them. So we apllied and both got drawn to cull a broken horn. A very fun hunt and cheaper than Africa.

My deer camp is on 6900 acres of river bottom land on the Neches River. Most rivers flow north and south, because of some altitudes of the land the river was force to go east and west for miles. That is where our lease is. Dividing our lease is a road called Fort Teran Rd that leads to an old abandon fort the Spanish had at one time. (historical marker)
Our deer camp has moved from the times of the original members sleeping in what ever and staying where ever to a central location. It is a small city. 38 travel trailer that stay on a yearly basis. An airconditioned and heated bunk house that sleeps 20 people. A camp house that has 4 refrigerators and 3 stoves. Running water, electricity, showers, toilets. We have a cooler that holds 25 deer and hogs and maintains a temp of 38 degrees. Dual skinning racks, 4 wheel drive trucks, 4 wheelers.....you name it we got it.....NOT...but we do now.
The BRADLEY ( Gabi ) is going to the deer camp ! I can't wait. Nov 7th thru Jan 3rd.(big gun hunt) Bow season starts a month before and mussel load last two weeks after. If I have listened to what the great teachers are teaching on this forum and perform my job on the Bradley well, sales should increase 15 to 20 more after hunting season. Hope I get a commission.

I should have used a pistol that time I shot a little chin hair off one at about 15' I was aiming right at the center of his right eye with my scope. That squirrel jumped up 5' and took a flying leap off the highest part of my deck. I think that squirrel changed his mind about eating out of my bird feeder cause he never came back.

I thought I broke my hand last week when I went in the hen house to check on eggs and there was a wild tom turkey in there eating out of the feeder.
He decided to fly out of the house before I could get out of the way and I got whacked in the hand by his wing.  It hurt so bad :'(
Turkey season starts on the 15th I may have to seek my revenge then. :D :D :D

I will get her out there. Since they told her that she has to twist her arm in the cast to keep the wrist fluid and in motion. I don't see how Twisting your arm to rest the barrel on would be a bad thing!! I will wait until the first set of x-rays with the cast on are done on Thurs.

Heck with a cast on she will not need a shooting rest  ;D

When my daughter was 10 she fell off the swing and broke both of her wrists, all her big brother kept saying is quit crying and suck it up. Dont you love big brothers? He did help her up and into the house so mom can freak out and rush her to the hospital like it was life or death. When i got the call at work the wife was hysterical and i had to calm her down so she could focus on the road.

I don't hunt deer anymore (turned my outdoors efforts over to fly fishing), but this one just about has me wanting to get back out in the field.  Unfortunately he lives well within the city limits of Nashville.

This is a 2006 pic of him when he was probably 10 maybe more points.

This is a 2007 pic of him when he was probably 12 or more points - has some big brow tines this year
(http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l95/43something/11-30-2006-05.jpg)

Did not see him last year, but saw him a few weeks ago (in velvet).  I did not get a good look at him, but he has to be at least 14 points (probably more) this year!  He has his big brow tines (probably more than two that are big enough to count) and possibly a fork in his royal antlers and maybe another fork in his crown tines.   I can't get a shot where he is looking at me to show his spread, but he has an impressive spread - well past his ears.  He has at least 3 offspring that I routinely see together lounging in people's yards up and down the road I travel to/from work.  They look to be good solid 10 points with the same style of rack as Dad - there is really no mistaking who the dad is!

Had a great day of walleye fishing yesterday. 48 "Eyes" in 6 hours!  ;D

Sorry... no pictures... we had a hard enough time staying in the boat! It was wickedly windy and huge waves but the fishing was awesome. Nothing real big... largest was around 5 lbs with most being 2.5 - 3 lbs. While we were fishing my buddy caught a 20 lb carp that took him a good half hour to get in. It was an ornery beast on 8 lb test line.

Absolutely SD!  ;)

The last 2 times out was a 32 day followed by the 48 yesterday. It certainly doesn't happen like that everytime but at this time of year we usually do really well. We should start getting into the biggin's soon as well.

Good to hear from ya and I hope things are going in the right direction. Stay in touch.

Wow, Pat. I have been to Canada many times for work and vacation. I have yet to see a moose in the wild let alone get a chance to hunt one. And in Alaska your seeing them out the window. Damm I got to get up there sometime. Course it doesn't help being laid off from work.

I just had to post my moose-in-the-front-yard pic, too.
But this was during the winter.
I took this from my kitchen window.

We have to take some doe here as the deer population is getting way out of hand. The state added an early season this year just to take does only.

I agree OU.
Taking does is not a question of ethics but one of game management.
We've had two bad winters in a row and our state has shorten our doe season from 30 days to 7.

For some reason the deer around here have very vertical antlers.  If you look at the deer that I posted early, he's the same way.
I'll have him check out that scoring site, he'll enjoy that :)

My son and my self had a good hunt this year, this is the bigest one he has got yet, there was another one running with him, he chose the bigest one.

I got a shot just before sun set. Would have been nice if he didnt break off his brow tines, he was a scraper, he had a cut going from his lower lip almost up to his nose.

I have to admit that my 8yr old and myself got skunked this past weekend during a doe only hunt. Took a shot at one but we couldn't find her Friday night. We used lights and blood lights and a dog in the morning still no luck. Saturday we didn't even see a deer. Sunday afternoon we seen 30 deer but none close enough to get a shot. We tried and I asked him if he had fun even though we didn't get one. "Yeah I had a blast Dad" So I guess it was worth the long hours and bad luck.

Thats what its all about, the fun with your son.

I had fun when we would go on youth hunts and the only thing I had in my hands were the binoculars. The boys always had fun, skunked or not.

Good times.

Pachanga, knowing you might be the only one on the forum who would know what I'm talking about, I hope you've been able to wet a line after these noble and tasty fish!  Great time to be out sight fishing for gators particularly after a cold snap.   Knowing it's Christmas, remembering my recent trip with my Dad, and remembering how much he loves to fish for "specs", decided to paint him one using the technique and bait he likes best as a Christmas gift.

Title: Re: Hunting and Fishing Pics---Post them here!
Post by: Quarlow on March 12, 2010, 03:37:49 PM
That is where I thought you meant. You aren't serious that you got those from there. I would not have beleived it. Just so everyone knows what we are talking about Mill lake is a small lake in the heart of the city of Abbottsford B.C. where people go to let there dogs take a swim and the ducks love it too. It is just really a pond left from a gravel pit I think. It is nicely fixed up but it is right next to the mall parking lot. Go figure.
Title: Re: Hunting and Fishing Pics---Post them here!
Post by: RossP on March 12, 2010, 04:19:38 PM
Nope not an old gravel pit. Use to be a limber mill on the west end. The pilings in the lake were from the railroad that went to the mill.
There is an underground spring that feeds the lake as well as a creek that is all but buried from the development in the area but it also feed the lake.
At the East end of the lake is an outflow creek that goes underground now, due to development but it feed a little creek in Ravine Park that has a small
Salmon Hatchery. Now I due admit that the lake is stocked with Rainbows but it also has, Crappie, Large Mouth Bass(the largest I have caught was 6 lbs.)
and Pumpkin Seed. I love taking my tube out and floating around catching Bows on the fly.

How frickin' big is it? I didn't think it was very big, like 2 or 3 acres. I only seen it once and I wasn't paying too much attention to it. I just saw it from the parking lot and walked over for a minute.

Yup it is a small lake
here is the specs off the
go fish bc site:

Name:     MILL LAKE
     Alias:    ABBOTSFORD
     Region:    Lower Mainland
     Watershed Code:    100-054300-53400-95300
     Waterbody Identifier:    01096LFRA
     Elevation:    54 m
     Surface Area:    18.48 ha.
     Perimeter:    2175 m.
     Maximum Depth:    11 m.
     Mean Depth:    2 m.

Just big enough for a float tube or two
The deepest part of the lake is about 36 feet according
to my fish finder. I usually fish in 6-12 feet of water.
Never get skunked, always alot of fun. Let me know if you
want to go one Monday.

How do the fish taste? Are they muddy? What is the feed in the lake? Once my shoulder heals in will be back to monday-friday for me. But thanks for the offer. I guess you don't get a lot of competition there? A bunch of kids casting from the little dock I'll bet.
Title: Re: Hunting and Fishing Pics---Post them here!
Post by: RossP on March 13, 2010, 10:07:14 AM
Not muddy at all. Lots of guys out in the nicer weather. One of Abbotsfords
best kept secrets. Once it heats up the big guys go to the deep part of the lake.
On a sunny day you will get 6-10 tubes and boats on the lake as well as about
2 dozen shore fishers.

I've got one under my belt. It's a little pricey to hunt them over here, between the tag, license, and travel expenses, I'm far better off spending $100 in groceries and getting a free one.

My first deer (off the top of my head) was $50 tag, $60 license, $200 gas, $800 mount, $30,000 4wd truck, $10,000 gear. So roughly $41,110. Yep, your right - don't try to figure it out.

Here is my $2000.00 trout. 5lbs.  Just got back from Port Mansfiled Texas on a guided fishing trip. The water looked exactly like chocolat milk and this was the only fish that made it to the ice chest, including the Guide. The fishing was the worst we have had in 15 years. But we still managed to have fun.

The hunt was awesome and quite a story that I will post below if anyone is interested.  But here are a couple of pictures of the turkey after smoking for 1 hour 40 minutes with Maple and then a run on the Weber kettle until the IT hit 175.  I should have wrapped the wings and legs with foil as they were over cooked due to them being so lean compared to store fattened birds.
Breast meat was awesome and very juicy.  I didn't do much to flavor this as I wanted to know what a wild turkey tasted like and not what seasoning tasted like.

The green bean/mushroom soup/ french onion tasted great with the turkey.  Looking forward to making Turkey ala King with the leftover white meat and Turkey noodle soup flavored with the legs and wings.

The Story if you care to read on:
Ordered some decoys and a new choke tube on Sunday, received on Wednesday, opening day was on Saturday.  Took the decoys out of the box and noticed the tip of the beak on one of the decoys was missing (not a problem though).  I filled the bodies with crumpled up newspaper to remove the dents from them being rolled up in the box.  The decoys did perform perfectly for us and I took the 8.5 inch beard at 9 yards after the TOM attacked the Jake decoy.  The tom came out from a tree line 30 yards out and strutted the entire way passing 4 feet in front of us and then straight to the Jake when he launched himself onto the Jake.  When he bounced back, he finally stuck his head up to give me a perfect head shot.

There is one talon puncture and a stake puncture in the Jake decoy from the attack.  With the material they are made of, those punctures won't be visible.   Since I have only used them once, I can't say how durable the decoys are going to be but with their effectiveness and pulling in TOMS and getting them to attack, I think I will be happy to replace them every few seasons if needed.  The Choke tube is a little harder to tell how well it performed.  With only a 9 yard shot, the pattern was probably no larger than a quarter or maybe a 50 cent piece.  The shot was completely confined to the head and beak.  Not a single pellet below the back of the head.  I thought it was a pretty good shot considering the Tom was getting ready to pounce again and was a bit of a moving target.
Previous to the Tom, we had hens and jakes come up to the blind and mill around for 15 minutes before checking out the decoys, being content with them out in front of us and then moving on. It was great to listen to the soft little peeps and purrs.  I was hoping to be able to listen to some yelps and other calls but this bunch was real quite.  I had a great time calling in the Tom when he was across the creek a couple hundred yards away.  Got him to go into a full strut which is where I had a little hope of getting him to cross over to our side.

Now for those that stuck out the story, should I have foregone the shot gun and just jumped out of the blind and grabbed the tom and wrestled with him?  Might have been more sporting?   ;D

Nice picture of your bird Gizmo and a great story to go along with your long beard. I would warn you that it is not a good plan to just jump out of the blind and wrestle the tom. They  WILL flock the crap out of you!

Been there done that.

Had a close shot just like you did and was a little off, only took half of his neck off so before he could get away I thought I would run out there and finish him off. I didnt want to ruin any meat.

Bad plan. He still had allot of life left in him and luckily I didnt get spurred but he flocked the crap out of my arms and got a couple cheep shots in my face. Them wing tips are like gettin hit with a stick, very fast and very hard.

I did win but it hurt like hell, wont do that again.

Bad plan. He still had allot of life left in him and luckily I didnt get spurred but he flocked the crap out of my arms and got a couple cheep shots in my face. Them wing tips are like gettin hit with a stick, very fast and very hard.

I did win but it hurt like hell, wont do that again.

Now that is a life experience.  :D

Hey STMW, no fair hunting in the back yard.   :D
Great looking bird.  Nice beard length too.

I haven't seen a TOM since opening day.  Had a few hens come up to us and check out the Jake Decoys, but I think all the TOMS were taken on opening day.

Hey Gizmo, Yeah i hunted second season here in illinois and opening day had five or six gobbling in the trees, then someone  shot four times in the neighboring property. It all went quiet for about three hours till i seen this one behind us in the timber. Never made a sound until right before i shot. I was really happy for my first bird. Will be going out in fifth season as well. Good luck stm

Went up to my brothers yesterday.  We (mostly he) made this in about 3 hours.  My brother has an awesome woodworking shop so this was a simple task.
First time trying to make a box call.
I think I need to make some adjustments.  The box has a pretty low tone, maybe too low.  I suspect if I take the sides down a bit, the tone will go up.

Purple Heart and Birds Eye Maple.

Won't get to try it out until next season.  Turkey closed today.

They work with the friction from the paddle and the side.  Chalk is used to help the friction.  The underside of the paddle has slight curvature to help with getting the correct break in the sound for yelps.

Here is a good youtube video that shows how to make calls on a turkey call.  If you look closely, there is a black paint type material on the paddle.  This is a replacement for the chalk and actually makes the call water proof.

I like that one better than the stick and plate type that I use, looks easier to carry and makes the same sounds.

There is a lot of fishing and hunting in Alaska.  Even with the high amount of hunting opportunities and the low density of people, there are still hunts that are so popular they are controlled by a lottery drawing for tags.

We are fairly new Alaskans – three years.  My neighbor, Don, has been here 28 years.  He told me to apply for some of the "longshot" hunts to get and I pulled a Kodiak Brown Bear hunt after two tries!  He's been applying unsuccessfully for 28 years.  After rolling his eyes momentarily, he said he was excited to hunt Kodiak with me for a brown bear.  I pulled the tag last fall for a hunt this spring.

After a lot of logistics and planning we got it figured out and three of us rode the ferry from Homer to Kodiak to begin my hunt.  We set camp in Sharatin Bay and began to glass the hillside across the tidal flats.

This is fairly typical weather and terrain.  Rainy, snowy, windy, some sun...

On day four we saw a bear right out of the den rolling in the snow on the hillside across from us.  He was acting lethargic and was sliding down the hillside.  He finally came all the way down to the tidal flat and we started to sneak up on him, a distance of ¾ mile.  We lost sight of him, but went to the last place we saw him.  As we peeked over a berm, there he was, just eating some grass!  I got him in my sights, a 200 yard shot.  My buddy Don suggested we wait a moment, the bear doesn't know we were there, and catch our breath.  After a minute or so, I took aim, the wind swirled, the bear smelled us and bolted two steps into the tree line!  He was gone.  I was so disappointed.

We left the area, circled around and came back to a different area to watch the same place, hoping he would come back.  About this time, Don went back to camp leaving Chad and myself watching this area.  After 45 minutes or so we heard Don hollering.  Chad checked it out and then came hustling back and said "Come on!".  We moved to another place and saw this bear coming right at us from the direction of our camp!  We set up behind a log and this guy came right in front of us, 150 yards away and I took him.  What an adrenaline rush!  For you gun guys I have a 300 Weatherby Magnum shooting 200 grain nosler partitions.

Here are some pics...

As it turned out, this bear had gotten into our camp and scattered things around.  When Don went back, he started cleaning up camp and heard a sound.  Not 15' away was this bear coming back for more.  He first un-holstered his .44, then picked up a camp shotgun loaded with slugs.  This made him feel much more secure.  He finally convinced the bear to leave and of all the directions that bear could have taken, he came right toward where Chad and I were set up on that other bear.  This bear paid the price to getting into our coffee and M&Ms!

This bear was a bad bear.  He tore up our camp and paid the price.  After skinning him we found he had a face full of birdshot, so someone shot him – probably last year – to chase him away.  There was no doubt he would have returned to our camp if we hadn't taken him – they just can't get enough of those M&M's!

The guy that is finishing the hide for me said the bear was probably an 8' bear – rather small by Kodiak standards.  After skinning and salting the hide in the field he shrank a bit and is now a 7'6" bear.  That is a "squared" number – the measurement from nose to tail, plus the measurement from left paw to right paw, added together and divided by two.  It's not unusual to get 10' bears on Kodiak...  He has a great quality hide and I'm planning to have him made into a rug that I will hang on the wall.

What a great hunt, great friends and great memories!

And, you know, the good karma thing - my neighbor Don got his Kodiak Brown Bear tag for a hunt this fall!  So we'll be back on the "Rock" this fall!

First full day off of my summer holidays today--ate some dungeness crab (stir fried with peppers and black bean sauce) and am going out for spring salmon tomorrow. On Monday we are hauling the boat further up the west coast of Vancouver Island to fish for 3 days. Can't wait to get our fill of big springs and dungeness till they're coming out of our ears. Yeeha! I'll post some pics when I get back.

Our 3 day trip turned out only so-so. We have a new for us 19 ft Arima and on the road on the way up, the bracket on the VHF broke so our radio was yoyoing on the mike cord--smashed.
Day 1-Screaming westerly wind--40 knots. We put the boat in the river, ran out into the bay to throw in the crab trap and then turned around and went back into shelter!
Day 2--Caught a nice 25 lb spring salmon but that was it!  Then we had some fuel selector switch problems and we found ourselves drifting around with no radio and no accessible gas! I normally think of myself as a responsible boater and I asked myself--How the hell did this happen!? I have a handheld VHF that I use for kayaking and I swore at that point I would never go out again without it as backup.  Anyway, we swapped some fuel lines going into the faulty switch and got ourselves going again. Pulled the trap on the way in and got some nice Dungeness for supper. Sat around the fire, ate crab and drank way too much peat juice.
Day 3-Nada.
On the other hand, now that we are back in home waters, I went out by myself yesterday and got a 26 lb and a 14 lb spring salmon. The vacuum sealer has been humming and I've got 8 trays of strips drying right now. Sorry, no pics--my camera is on the fritz. I am thinking about a waterproof digital as a replacement.

Someone's going to enjoy some nice elk roasts.
We are driving 2 hours west of us here on the island for our final salmon trip of the year next weekend. It has been one awesome fishing season. My nephew is flying out from Alberta to come with me to try and nail some coho. Here is a fishing report from a guide up there from this weekend.

QuoteCoho is ON FIRE. I did two trips today, we had 12 in the boat for 10 AM for the morning crew, and tubbed out again for the afternoon crew. Lots of fish in the bay in the strait and wherever, Batrix and Jellyfish Hoochie was the ticket behind green. Go get 'em, many in the high teens! Out again tomorrow. Plenty of hatchies or lots of wilds in the bay.

Last Chance Fishing Adventures

"teenage coho" means a 16 or 17 lb coho dancing on the end of your line. Can't wait. :)

lol I was wondering how long it would take you guys to notice. I said the same thing to them. For a minute I thought I was the one who didn't know what quail looked like. Both of them got rabbits, nobody here thought they weren't quail, so I was saying to myself "I must be wrong, these gotta be quail"  ;D It's a good thing rabbits are in season, they had more fun with them then quail (at first until they had to clean them) then it was "I don't want to hunt rabbits anymore."

One of them actually did get two quail, but I didn't get any pics. Rough day, my gun broke.

They tracked it for about a mile after it was hit.  Had to drag it through a creek and some wet areas before they could get a Gator close enough to haul it back to the truck.  He said it was brutal, but worth it.

I decided to take my nephew out deer hunting with me this year. It was his first time going, so he was pretty excited. It's was a pretty rough hunt, we saw very few deer, and the temperature swings were far greater than we expected, low 30's to 90's. I did however run into a well known (out here) deer hunting guide and his son. We chatted for a while and he agreed that it was pretty tough this year. A lot of hunters and very few shots. He said he was leaving, I told him that usually after the weekend everyone leaves. He said he'd probably be back later in the week.

I managed to find a few bucks and sent my nephew after them. The first one he didn't shoot because he wasn't sure he heard me right, the second one he forgot about the safety on the gun and that one got away. We were out there 6 days and I think his attitude changed just a little.

As it happens, my nephews birthday was Wednesday the 10th, he just turned 17. I asked him while we were still out there where he wanted to go. I told him it was his hunt and he should do what he wants to get a buck and not listen to me. He said he wanted to go to a watering hole where we saw a couple of deer earlier in the week. I stayed with the truck. A few minutes later, here drives up the guide and his son. We start chatting it up again, and I tell him my nephew is out by the tank. He happened to notice my GPS and we started talking about it, he was pretty impressed and said he's probably going to get one. He said he was going to check some things out up the same road my nephew went on.

After a while, I get this strange call on the radio: "Hey you, the guy with the white truck, I don't remember your name, but you brought your nephew out hunting with you." I guess he noticed what radio channel I was on. I responded and he said he's got this buck that he and his son don't want to shoot because he's not big enough, and wants to know if we want it. I told him sure, we'll go check it out. I get my nephew to meet us there. When we both get there, he tells me that the buck is about 400 yards away. I told my nephew to take my gun, since he was only shooting a 243 without a scope, and I had a 30.06 with a good scope. The guide has us sneak up this mountain to get within the 400 yard range. He points the buck out, and I can't see it in my binoculars, he says here look in mine (Swarovski). Wow, it stood out like a sore thumb. He tells my nephew to get ready. He asked me how my gun shot. I told him it's dead on at 200 yards, and a little to the right at 300. He says wait a minute, here use this gun ($6000 gun with a $2000 scope & high dollar bullets). My nephew is just freaking out. I told them maybe he should get a little closer because he's never shot that far, I've only had him shoot to 300 yards. They were both saying, no it's fine he'll get it. I talked them into getting a little closer, but it was still about 375. He takes the first shot and misses, the deer just stands there, another shot, still just stands there. We finally get him to calm down, and he takes a 3rd shot and hits him. The deer staggers and goes down, but then gets up and walks over to a tree and sits down. He was still alive. The guide tells me to climb the mountain with my gun and get above him, then scoot over the top of him and work my way down. He said if he runs down, my nephew will get him, and if he runs up, I should take him. After a long climb (and me thirsty as all get go (failure to bring my pack with water), I get within 10 yards. The buck stands up, the guide tell me to shoot him and I got him. He went straight down. My nephew then had the fun chore of cleaning and carrying the deer back down to the truck.

We get to the truck and took some photos.

As you can see, his attitude changed for the better. He was happy as all heck getting a deer on his birthday. I couldn't thank the guides enough. I was so thrilled that they took the time out of their hunt to help us out, and he told me that this was the first year he and his son have been out in years. I felt so bad, but he said not to worry, it's what his son wanted to do. I thanked him again.

He then wasn't too thrilled with the next chore, but took it in stride.

What a memorable trip for my nephew. I'm sure he will remember this for the rest of his life. He's going to get it mounted. It only green scored about 75, but he's happy as all heck with it.

Kevin.....he will remember this day for as long as he lives.  I still remember my first deer when my Uncle took me out.  That was over 40 years ago.  My oh my I can still see the entire day and evening in my minds eye.  Memories is something that can never be taken from us.  Unless we kill our brain cells with ummmm I forget.  ;D

What a great day for your nephew and you.  I used to hunt quite a bit and had an older brother who taught me.  I'll never forget the day he handed me my first shotgun at Christmas.  Just an old used 20 gauge but it meant a lot to me.  I'm sure you mean a great deal to your nephew.  Good on you Kevin, good on you.

Here are some pictures of some fishing I did last summer. We have a chain of lakes that have Northern pike in them that were illegally introduced. You are allowed to swim and spear fish for them . I have been doing this for about 10 years and can't get enough. Last summer I shot and landed 115 pike for the season. I start in June and go until the end of October. The FWP wants them out as they are eliminating native species and about everything else in the lakes. Here is a string of pictures. I tell my friends at work that sissies hide in a boat and real men get in the water for a little hand to fin combat. This is why I have the handle that I have.

thanks Q

it was pretty intense. the Captain said this to us at the start of the trip - "i can take you up the west coast where the water is calm and the scenery is nice and we might catch some fish. OR, i can take you to the south east coast where the swells are huge and you all might get seasick, but we WILL catch a lot of fish".

we went to the south east coast  ;D

Some nice looking dolphin! That's what we call them in the gulf fishing off the AL & FL coast. I'm thinking the others are Spanish mackerel? Nice catch!

Yea, opt for catching fish and take Dramamine! I've been seasick and it's the closes to death I've been yet! Dramamine!  ;D

Awesome. I was a deckhand on a commercial troller on the westcoast of B.C. here and after 2 or 3 days of my first trip the sick went away. After that the bigger the seas the more fun it was. Of course I grew up around the water so it is in my blood. My captain would say I was like a newfie (New Foundlander) cause the bigger it got the better I fished. It was not uncommon to be out on deck in 30 to 40 foot seas with the wind blowing 60 and gusting to 70 or 80 MPH.

One of those days---No pics cause it was one of those days where if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all. We were out fishing for spring salmon this morning and the rod slams down --Fish ON!! My partner grabs the rod and I start getting everything else in to clear the decks when I hear him curse. I look over and the reel has spooled line all over the place and of course --fish gone. He had tried to adjust the tension and got his thumb caught on the spinning handles (hence the term knucklebusters). A long silence ensued. I told myself the next fish is mine--and there's no way I'm losing it! 1/2 hour later--the rod screams again--Fish ON! I grab the rod as he takes a couple of good runs and then all of a sudden he does a 180 and heads directly at the boat! I'm reeling like a madman to catch up to him and keep the tension on the line. He ends up right under the boat and I suddenly see why he reversed direction and came back at me--there's a big seal chasing him around under our boat. I tried to horse him in but no luck--seal 1, me 0. If I would have had a gun I would have shot the SOB. We had a good laugh after I regained my sense of humour and enjoyed the rest of the morning--it was a beautiful day and we were fishing (but not catching).
Next time.

Just got back from our annual trip to Nootka sound on Vancouver Island. We were blessed by the fish gods with 16 springs(chinook salmon) and 3 Halibut the largest being 40lbs. I will post pictures later. The fishing was the best I've seen in 9 years of going there ;D ;D. We were limited out everyday by 9am the last morning we were tagged out by 7:30am and the wife and I finished that with a double header :P

Nice fish Sam.
You should get some nice meals off of them.
I go a few myself last Friday.

I got 7 with my speargun.

Chris

You hit the nail on the head. I did make my back sore lifting the fish in the boat and moving the cooler. I am in the process of arranging another shot in the back. My Spear fishing partner just called and I had to pass on the next trip. It sucks getting old.

Kirby you need to bring a few fillets and I am really sure we could do some horse trading for some Chiro adjustments. I happen to have this little brother who is a Chiro and happens to like fish. He specializes in the Atlas Vertebra. Never know could help some. That and I can still kick his butt Especially for some Northern fillets!! ;D ;D

If I get some back relief and have a better fall season I could ship you a few packages when the weather is colder and things like that ship a little better.  I had my back fused about 10 years ago and the nerve coming out of the fusion is what is giving me trouble. There is nothing having to do with the fusion that a ciro can do. It is solid as a rock. I still have the screws and rods in my back. I have had a MRI and High def CT scan and they can't find the pinch point. I am about to let them just go in for a look. All I know is it hurts like hell and I have to walk like a duck when it starts to pinch like it is doing today.

I saw this thread and just had to post a couple of pictures....
This was last year with my nephew 2 years old.

and this was just this summer my boy with his first salmon in Kitimat, quite a struggle as i had him on a light pole set up for trout!
After he caught this pink it was hard to get him to leave the river's edge to come eat or anything.... It was awesome to see him when we landed our first spring that was over 30lbs too... I'll definetly have a fisherman by my side for life now!

and finally the first Chinnook that I caught on the trip fairly small at 18lbs but beautifully chrome and fresh

The salmon season is winding down--but what a summer it has been! We have had the best spring (king) salmon season here on Vancouver island in many, many years. Here is a shot taken in July in Port Renfew from a day spent out on Swiftsure Bank.

The smoker has been busy with hot and cold smoked spring salmon and will be fired up next weekend for hot smoking pink fillets prior to canning them.
Cheers,

I know this is an old thread but i thought i would throw a couple of my pictures in here too.
My 2009 (Iowa) bowkill buck. Scored 184 5/8", and a couple of really nice crappies at a local honeyhole. 2 1/2lbs and one oz shy of 3lbs.

I've been a bowhunter for many years, and one of the reasons I asked Santa for a Bradley Smoker is so I can make and process my own sausage, and cure/cook other Venison-related meat products.  Here are a couple of deer I have taken the last 2 years.

November 7th 2012 and 2013 were very good days for me.  Both of the bucks pictured below were taken on November 7th on our property in Illinois.

This is my 2012 buck.  He was a BIG 9 pointer, that weighed just over 235 on the hoof.  My son and I liked to never got him out of the woods!

This is the buck I took this year, also a big 9 pointer.  He didn't weigh what the 2012 buck did, but I have a lot of meat in the freezer from him.

I should have the first buck (2012) back from the Taxidermist in 4 weeks or so, and I'll be sure to post a picture of the mount.  The 2013 buck will also go on the wall, but it will be about a year from now before he is done.  I love bowhunting!    :)

Just found this thread!  Love it--some really nice trophies!  I've pretty much bowhunted exclusively the last 5 or 6 years here in Northern Va.  We have one of the most generous seasons and bag limits.  I'll post a few from this year.

Here is "Patches", the piebald I chased last year and this.  I had tons of trail camera pictures of her and several close encounters.  Finally, on October 30th 3 or 4 bucks came through chasing does.  She was one of them, giving me a 15 yard shot.  I'm getting a full body mount of her! 8)
