First of this is an open discussion to see if members of the forum are interested and how it can be made the best it can be.
Christmas is coming soon and just thought it might be fun to do a Christmas gift exchange with those that wanted to be included. I know times are hard for some out there and if this year is not the right year then maybe we can try it again when times are better for all. Share your thoughts and Ideas on if this might be something we would like to do.
Some things that need to be decided are :
1. Is there enough people that would be interested to make this happen.
2. A limit on what we want to share. (my thoughts were $10 to $15 plus shipping) It could be a couple of bottles of your favorite rub. A cookbook. A gift certificate to a certain store. Etc.
3. Set a dead line for those that want to be included.
4. Set a dead line for sending your gift.
If this happens I know I would need some help keeping up with everything, so if you want to help a 1/2 Cajun let me know, or if someone else wants to be in charge...please please speak up.
Part of the fun would be not knowing who is sending you your gift until it arrived.
I don't have all the answers, I just had the thought.
Let your voice be heard.
CRG it is a brilliant thought. Count me in on both; sharing a gift and whatever assistance I can give.
My thought is to some how link that up with the RISTRICTED GIVEAWAY thread???
HR
I think Habs has got his hands full and he shouldn't do all of the work for us. I know he will be helping with advice and support.
No CRG. I did not mean to dump it on Habs. I just thought that the christmass gifts should be going to some who would deserve it.
Habs will be getting many emails regarding eligibility and will pick one. We could take advantage of the rest of the list.
HR
That is a thought...hmmmm
Glad you posted it and maybe Habs can tell us what kinda response he is getting and it is a good topic
for discussion. Thanks HR
It's too early in the morning for me to make any suggestions. :) I will read it later when I'm more alert.

HR
HR;
You suggestion is reasonable, but to maintain the confidentiality that I promised in that post, I would not be able to share the list.
Surprisingly I have not received many responses. I will be bumping that post tomorrow to remind members there will be one week left.
Habs,
I see the point about compromising your confidentiality promise. But let me ask you some thing, Can USPS deliver to an address without the presence of a name? And if so, would divulging the address be considered a compremise?
Let me elaborate: Let us say Memeber X want to give a gift of "Whatever" to any "Y" on your list. Then you would PM X with Y's address only without names would that work??
HR
You don't need a name or the correct name for any delivery that doesn't need a signature; just a correct street and/or house address. You can use any name or just put "Occupants". In today's world it is too easy to do an internet search on an address and get the name of the person living there.
It is funny how what you think is a good idea, hundreds of others don't. Guess that is why I never ran for public office.
At least everyone is in agreement.
I still think it has some merit and if a more "respected" member decides that they want to put it together I want to participate.

I think it's a great idea.
How will the giver/recipient relation be determined? As far as deadlines go, you're running the show, you set 'em.
Please count me in and let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
Arnie that was actually a bad choice of words. I was actually thinking respected meaning some of the older members that have been here a lot longer than me.
I know there are some issues that have to be work out to protect ones privacey.
I think it's a dead thread. Made a rhymn. CRG
Kind of a fun idea but I'd probably decline to participate due to shipping costs over the pond.
This is a nice idea. But like KH stated about shipping costs. What if you gift to someone and dont know they are overseas until they send you their address? I mean i dont mind shipping (when i can afford it) And some great forum members are on the bubble with jobs and such?
Lets all brainstorm this nice idea a bit more.
nepas
What if the exchange was set up with the people in there area, like the peps in the states ship to the states and UK to UK and Canada to Canada and so on.
Just throwing this out there.

How about we make two types of donations. Some members donate stuff, others would donate the shipping charges to be paid to the donor?? Just a thought.
That would still leave the confidentiality matter.

this is a great idea. if we have enough Canadian members i'd be happy to sign up.
You could count me in.
Concerning the privacy issues I don't think its a big deal, but for those that do maybe you could limit it to those who have over a certain post count (not newbies like the ones recently kicked off). If you don't have a high enough post count well you can always participate next year. Just my 2 cents.
SIA
CRG,
I would be willing to help and join. As an Idea of who gets who. Everyone can PM their info to one location. Like me for example. Then I would write down everyone that sent info and do a random drawing of those people that wished to participate and then pm the information of the Receiver to the Giver.
Thanks for everyone's input and suggestions.
Part of the magic of Christmas going up as a child was the anticipation of receiving and opening your gift.
Sometimes it was not what was inside the gift just the fun of opening it. I remember one year things were
tight and I got "one gift" for Christmas, but it was still a great Christmas.
When I thought about this I just thought of the fun of getting a bottle of Smokeitall's fav local rub, or a
bottle of Carolina Treet from nepas or speciality cheese from whomever.
I will check with the Post Office and check rates and how far they will ship under their new one price
shipments and post the results. That way maybe we can include the great guys from the North Country,
eh? If not then maybe a regional trading of gifts would be the answer.

Thanks Tenpoint5, I was hoping for a God sent person to be in charge and you are the perfect person.
We can kinda finalize everything and you can post the end results and then I think a new post after gifts start arriving and a way for everone to share and thank the one that sent the gift.
If we discuss it enough, we won't have to say when we do this next year we need to change this or that.
Keep your thoughts flowing.
Ok 10.5 looks like you are putting the list together. Mark my name down first, you already have my address. This should be fun.

We had a tough year when the kids were little. I used to go to the bank's drive up to cash my check. We told the kids that there's not much money for Christmas that year. One of them said, "Well just go to the bank and get more." If only it was so easy (sigh) ;)
I think there's going to be a lot of tough Christmas's this year for a lot of people :(
SIA
10.5 and CRG,
I think this is a wonderful idea and I would love to be counted in. I know I live in Jordan but with the wonders of technology, I think I still can make it. I can have my donation processed through ebay or an other online seller for that matter.
HR
HR, this is not a donations but an actual exchange of gifts between forum members. You are right, you can access the internet and ship right from where you buy.
We still have some talkin to do about it.
However you want to call it, I would still like to be counted in..
HR
pm 10.5 with info

HR
HR, you need to roll the post up and read it.......10.5 wants you to pm him with your name adress, city etc.If you don't how will they know where to sent something to you to?

After a nice phone disscussion with CRG. We came up with the following.
Cutoff date for those that would like to enter is Sunday the 15th of Nov
The Last day that your item should be shipped on or by is Friday the 4th of Dec
The shipping date is to ensure that the folks overseas will get their gift by Christmas if at all possible If anyone has a better suggestion feel free to let us know.
Sounds good. I really think this is gonna be fun. Hope it is a big turn out and that it will be an annual event.

Ray, The only secrect is who got your name until you get the gift. Like Deb said try to make it something from your area that the other person might not be able to get. We will have a post where you can come to , tell what you got and who sent it to you. That will be the fun part.

When the person received the gift, he sent me a thank you message on the forum. I asked how he figured out so quickly who sent it...my name and address was on the required shipping slip.......... ;D

All right you commies I fixed it. If you noticed it was posted at 10 after 9 this morning. To completely under stand Why when I counted names I came up with 16 then 18 then with one eye closed 15 when I knew good and well there should have been 17 names on the list. For you to comprehend this you have to get out of bed at 6am get 4 kids up and ready for school take them to school, get the oil changed on the truck, mow the grass, and eat lunch about 2pm. Now take a shower get in bed at 3pm sleep until 5pm get up get dressed make lunch for yourself which you should eat about 1030pm. Drive 30 miles to get to work punch in at 7pm finally get to eat your lunch at 5:30am punch out at 7am drive home help get the kids ready and off to school. Climb into bed at7:45am only to hear that the phone company is here to swap the the old stuff out for the new fiber optic stuff. While your waiting you pop on the internet reply to a couple of posts before they kill the connection. You finally get to lay down at 11:15am. So if I typed it wrong or missed someone I was a little sleep deprived and I'M SORRY :-* :D
See what happens when you volunteer for something 10.5? No good deed goes unpunished ;D
It's all good, but thanks for the explanation. I think you drank some coffee in there too.

I just had a thought. If there is someone out there that wants to get in on the gift exchange but is worried about everyone having access to their address. I can assure you that OTHER than MYSELF the only person that will see your address is the person that will be sending you your gift. After the drawing ALL Addresses will be destroyed and deleted from my computer.

I'm still in, but having problems. Look at Deb, for example; very thoughtful ideas. Being a man is more difficult. We think of maybe a chain saw or cordless drill. I'm definitely going to have to consult my wife on this one. :D
Hell if you are going to give some one a chainsaw hope you get my name.
Don't need a chainsaw, but a 1.75L of Crown would be good....or Templeton Rye.
I'd like to thank you all for your very thoughtful suggestions. ;D ;D I'll probably get a pack of pumpkin seeds myself. But who cares. It's the thought that counts, right? And, we certainly have a bunch of nice thoughtful people here.
For Christmas a few years ago I thought I was really missing the spirit of giving. Sending baskets of joy was so commercial and expensive. So I started a tradition with my siblings no more baskets of joy for me. I went to the local bulk market and bought two shopping carts full to the top of canned goods with a few goodies to boot and brought it to the local food bank. Now we exchange Christmas cards instead of gifts. And every year I go to the local Aldis and get a couple of baskets of food and bring it to the food bank... a gift that really gives again. There is a added benefit to donating and getting to know the volunteers is that when you go to the charity fish fry you get beer instead of tea...
JT
I contact some of the local pastors in our town and try to help 3 to 4 families out at Christmas. Makes you feel kinda sad and happy at the same time.

Great Deal....This is going to be fun. Would be nice to end up with 30 to 40 people. Where in Fla you from?
I had to run to Houston this morn and while waiting for some things to get finished up I went to some different places to get (start) shopping for my reciepent to be announced later. That was and is going to be alot of fun. It is almost like buying for yourself except you don't get to keep it. I want to make sure the person I got had a variety of things from this area so I kinda went low $ amount per item, more items. Not saying you have to do this, this is just the way I went.
I post this just to give an idea as to what at least one person is doing.
We need more players......PM 10.5 if you want to have a little bit of fun for Christmas.
CRG I think the last count was 21 folks taking part
We need to get Brian in on this. BRIAN, come get in the forum christmas party.

We are now up to 25 folks
I will draw the names and start PMing the results to folks Sunday evening about 5pm CST or something close to that. I will send a name and address to each individual that has expressed interest in the exchange. That name and address is the person that you will be sending your gift to.
So aside from me is there any other canucks on the list.
MikeRadio is from BC Quarlow :)
Carolyn
There is three canucks on the list: Quarlow, g, and Mikeradio unless a couple more join in the fun before I draw the names tomorrow afternoon.
Haven't gotten any new folks and I had some time on my hands so I drew the names and sent off as many as I could. Apparently you can't send more than 20 PM's an hour there is a limit on that!!! So as soon as I can I will send the rest of the folks their recipients name.
PLEASE remember to mail your gift prior to Friday the 4th of Dec.
Hour is up all names have been sent out. My job here is done it is now up to YOU to ensure that you get your gift mailed off!!!
Thanks Chris!!!!!
Thanks Chris for all you have done.
I forgot the original rules... Do we keep ourselves as the 'giver' anonymous, and let the recipient try to guess based on the contents of the package?

I don't think it matters let them know who they received the gift from.
The main thing is that everyone sends a gift because they will be receiving a gift from someone and it wouldn't be fair to their recipient not to send a gift.

My dear Carolyn that would be your fault you could go out and shoot a bigger animal than he does!! I know who would do the chores and run Emma to all her things. Try it with four yardapes all going different directions at the same time. Take care of the Home front.

It's been really slow here this year for deer. We've had a lot of construction on a road to the south of us and i think it has scared the deer a bit. Also, we have had more elk than normal hanging around which kind of scares the deer, too.
My dad is coming up from California to hunt deer so I'm passing on deer hunting this year. The only trouble is that my husband likes to shoot ones with nice horns and has passed on some deer that I would have shot. I'm not has particular about antlers as long as the deer is made of meat, then it's a shooter :D

Atta Girl can't eat eat them damn horns anyhow.

Thanks, I am doing fine, just super busy. :)
You're right, I haven't been around. My daughter has had activities everyday this week and I'm getting ready for my folks arriving here for Thanksgiving/deer season.
I'm a hunting widow, too :D
No deer hanging in the garage..yet.

Q if it doesn't get there soon lemme know and I'll go talk to the folks down at the post office.
It's here, It's here, my xmas gift exchange arrived.Through no fault of his own dbrown1 was laid up so his gift to me didn't get out as soon as he would have liked. That said it was shipped with likely enough time to have arrived by at least New Years eve day. Who knows why it took this long but it is now here and that is all that counts. This gift exchange in my eyes was a huge success and Tenpoint five and Classicrockgriller are to commended on a job well done. Although it seems more of a labour of love than a job. You 2 guys went above and beyond for this cause when you think about it, this is just a forum for a silly little apparatus that is so big by way of how it has bonded total strangers from the four corners of this planet to a brother and sisterhood to the point of we know more about each other than you could ever imagine knowing about someone you have never met face to face. And when you think about those who you have this common bond with you know that if it were not for this little metal box that produces smoke you would walk right past these people never knowing that you have a thing in common. And this is all due to some guy who really liked to put smoke to food so much so that he designed and built what is arguably the ultimate smoker and turned it into a business. And dare I say this is more than a business to these people because when have you ever dealt with another business that treats you the way they do. Yes there is some that do and some right here in our mix such as the guys from Yard and Pool and a few others. I for one would love to here "The rest of the story" and maybe I will send out a message to see if we can get the whole truth from him. Anyway I am rambling on now and the whole reason for this is the gift which is.......in my next post hahaha
OK so here it is and again thank you to David (dbrown1) he scoured the forum to figure out what would be an appropriate gift that would be suitable for me and this is what he came up with and in my opinion he nailed it.
When I say he nailed it I have to tell you that I have always been intrigued with knives and even as a young boy got books from the library on knives and their history and how to make them. In fact this very knife is one that when have the time to I will delve into making. I am very interested in the Inuit culture and how the people of the north lived and survived in such conditions. Of course David would not have know this from anything I have posted on here, yet my love for all things smoked salmon maybe slightly evident and this is one of the things this knife is good for. Now I just have to get the right technique figured out as to how to be comfortable with this type of blade.
For those who are unfamiliar with this knife it is called an ULU (oo-loo) which has been used by the native Eskimo people for centuries and was originally made from slate or if they found one the right shape from granite and even bone. When the white man came to the north with knifes shaped as we know them the Eskimos adapted to the ways of the white people and made theirs out of steel but still kept the shape they were used to. If you have ever seen a National Geograhics show or any that show the people of the north you may have seen them use these knives with precision accuracy. OK I'm rambling again. Thank you so much David and Happy New year to you and yours.
Very Nice indeed there Quarlow!! I think it was mentioned to me that you would really enjoy using it on Salmon. Looks Great
Thats a sweet knife there Q
Now to figure how to use it and keep all your fingers.
dbrown1, what a great gift.
Q, that is just a beautiful knife, almost too pretty to use.
My X BIL brought me one from Alaska when he was up there and I use it to cut cheese. ;D
Thanks for the History of your gift and congrats!
db, I see a smile on Q's face. Great job and glad you are feeling better.
Glad you liked it Q , once you learn how to use it you will love filleting fish with it . ;D
I have already used it. Just made my stuffed pork loin roast. Filet the roast, chopped the ingredients and cut the string with it. Got some pics and will post after dinner. Just watching the smoker till she preheats and in it goes.
Cool knife. I never seen one like that before.
You never seen the Eskimos grab a piece of raw blubber in their teeth and then cut a piece off and eat it? Mmm yummy ...not. ;D
Here is a link to the ULU factory if your interested.

So here is the ULU in action.

I was chopping nuts, apricots and rasins for another of my stuffed pork loin roasts.
Worked like a charm. You may notice I am keeping my finger tips tuck well back. Didn't need any more meat with dinner. ;D ;D
If you haven't checked out the website for these knives you should. They have a spot to enter your name cause they give one of these knives away every month and all you have to do is fill in the blanks.
Better suck in that stomach too. :D ;D ROTFFLMAO
Suck it in I was sticking it out to hold the food so I could keep my fingers out of the blade. That was self preservation of my digits. ;D ;D

Hey there you go. So how did you like it.
Actually never knew what it was for till you got yours.
Mine is only sharp on one side. Is that right?
Yep and when you use it have the flat side to you and the bevel away.
If you go to the website they show you how to use it proper. You basicly rock it back and forth.
I can see how you could follow the meat of a fish to de-skin it.
Quote from: classicrockgriller on January 06, 2010, 11:22:28 PMI can see how you could follow the meat of a fish to de-skin it.
Perceptive observation. As I understand it, the ulu was originally used by Eskimo women to skin and clean fish. Also, yours is relatively unusual considering the engraving. Most Alaskan ulus are connected to the handle at the ends of the blade rather than at a single point in the center like yours (more of a Canadian style, I'm told).
I am sure mine is more for the tourist trap rather than true application of practicular use.
Quote from: classicrockgriller on January 06, 2010, 11:57:54 PMI am sure mine is more for the tourist trap rather than true application of practicular use.
No doubt, but pretty cool anyway.
But now the back drop pic of the ulu is authenic Crown Royal cask #16

And I quote "Handcrafted and Finished in Cognac Oak Cask"
I was in the liquor store at new years getting a cheap bottle of sparkling wine for the big night( i really hate champagne) and looking around. I wanted to see if they sold this Makers Mark you boys yak about, which they do. They had a 26'r of cask #16 and it was over a $100. As I drooled between coughs and gags I thought probably damn fine stuff I guess I just have to dream about it. Even the MM was out of my price range. Now my drink is CR and I love nothing better but you boys have got some pretty fine taste there.

I wouldn't pay that for any kind of adult beverage.
Someone that we have done work for over the last 25 yrs sent that to me.
I'm kinda surprised it made it to the House. ;D
Good thing it wasn't me delivering it. ;D ;D ;D
I'm not much of a Canadian whiskey fan, but CR sure does make a pretty bottle and the velvet bags were always pretty neat.
